Title: Early Warning Signs
1Early Warning Signs
2Early Warning Signs
Do you know what your body is trying to tell
you?
3Early Warning Signs
Our bodies tell us when were afraid or in
danger. Listen to what your body is trying to
tell you and respond to it appropriately. If
you are in a situation that is making you feel
uncomfortable, afraid or in danger what could you
do?
4We have the right to feel safe all the time
STOP! THINK! ACT!
5Respond Appropriately!
Act calmly. If you know what to do take
charge! Leave the situation as soon as you
can. Find somewhere safe and tell an adult that
you feel frightened. Ring home or a friend.
Tell them where you are, who you are with and
what the problem is. Say NO! Be confident,
look the other person in the eye and walk away
holding your head up high.
6When is it fun to feel scared?
Sometimes it is fun to feel scared. Have you
ever been on a roller coaster or watched a scary
movie? It can be fun to be scared when we
have a choice, when we are in control, when we
know that it will eventually stop.
7How do you know that you are in danger?
When you are in danger you feel uneasy,
uncomfortable and frightened.
8Have you ever felt afraid or in danger?
It is not always fun to be scared. If you
are feeling unsure ask yourself Do I have a
choice? Is this what I want? Do I know it
will stop soon and I will feel safe again?
9Explain how you knew that you were in danger
What thoughts did you have? What physical
sensations did you notice?
10Early warning signs
Did you know that you body will give you a set
of early warning signs to help you out of a
sticky situation? Our bodies have a built in
alarm system. Much like a car alarm that sounds
its horn and flashes its lights when it is being
threatened, our body responds to danger in a way
that is hard to ignore.
11What are the early warning signs?
Hairs stand on end. Rapid heartbeat. Sweaty
armpits. Sweaty palms. Tummy flips. You
need the loo. Shaky legs. Dry mouth.
12How can you keep yourself feeling safe?
Try to avoid situations where you feel
uncomfortable or frightened.
13What if?
What if your journey to school involves you
walking through an alley? Walk with a
friend. Ask your parents to meet you from
school. Only walk that way home when it is
light. Carry a torch.
14What if?
What if you have to travel to school on a bus?
There are a group of teenagers who make you feel
frightened. Travel with friends. Sit amongst
other people or near the driver. Wait for the
bus in a well lit place. Take the route you
know best. If you feel in danger tell the
driver immediately. Stay alert and trust your
instincts.
15We have the right to feel safe all the time

HELPING HAND to remind you of the people you can
