HPPD Successes The HPPD Task Force includes
over 30 organizations, with a membership of
approximately 50. Production of the HPPD State
Plan outlining goals, objectives and strategies
for increasing the health and wellness of
people with disability in Virginia.

- 24 - 35.9 percent of the population in several
Virginia - counties reports having a disabilities.
- Based on 2005 BRFSS data, compared to individuals
- without disabilities,Virginians with disabilities
are - Less likely to
- - report good to excellent health (59.6 vs.
92.6) - - have engaged in physical activity within the
past - month (62 vs. 79) (BRFSS 2000-2002)

- - overweight according to body mass index (70.4
- vs. 59.5)
- - more likely to report that they were currently
trying - to lose weight (54.9 vs. 46.1)
- More likely to have been told, at some point in
time - that they have
- - high blood cholesterol (50.6 vs. 33.7)
- - high blood pressure (46.7 vs. 23.3)
- - Diabetes (15 vs. 5.2)
- - Arthritis (63.3 vs. 19.9)
8The importance of physicalactivity and healthy
eating
- Regular physical activity provides more energy
and endurance for everyday activities, improves
muscle tone, flexibility and assists in healthy
weight maintenance. - Eating a healthy and balanced diet is something
that we all should strive to do, however it is
essential for people with disabilities.

- Extension office that will provide basic and
- easy to follow instruction on healthy eating at
