Title: Speciation Update: URG 3000N Carbon Sampler
1Speciation Update URG 3000N Carbon Sampler
- NESCAUM MAC Meeting
- Troy, New Hampshire
- April 24 25, 2007
2STN Carbon Conversion Update Why? -Changes in
the network to address inconsistencies in carbon
sampling and analysis procedures used in urban
STN/SLAMS and rural IMPROVE programs How?
EPA will manage coordination and implementation
of conversion EPA is using a contractor to
procure, install and train operators on URG
3000-N sampler use Contractor (with EPA) will
contact and coordinate installation with
Region/State agencies Process will be
repeated for rest of the network in batches of
60 -Expect to complete first phase of
conversion in mid 07
3What Happens to the Filter? Once installations
are complete, analysis will be switched to TOR
analysis by DRI (Can DRI handle the workload?)
All sites will move to new analysis at once
Concurrent TOT and TOR collection and analysis
will be done for about two months Sampling
modules, cassettes, and analysis will continue to
be supported and supplied by RTI Field blank
collection and subtraction also to change
4URG3000N Looks like IMPROVE? Identical to the
IMPROVE sampler except Mass flow control

5The URG 3000N installation requirements 1. A
minimum horizontal inlet spacing of 1-meter a
maximum of 4-meter between the SASS (or your
current speciation sampler) and the new URG
3000N. 2. A maximum of 1-meter vertical inlet
spacing between the SASS (or your current
speciation sampler) and the new URG 3000N. 3.
Two (2) outlets totaling 15 Amp. 115 VAC with in
two (2) feet of the sampler. 4. Wooden or
similar decking material to affix the sampler to
the final sampler location. 5. Room to safely
access the back of the instrument. The
controller keyboard and memory card are on the
back of the sampler. The keyboard can be removed
and brought to the front on a coiled cord.
6NY has 7 Speciation samplers Two are now
collocated with URG3000N Samplers This one is in
the South Bronx

8Project Status About 30/57 sites done so
far Rest of sites scheduled for April 30th
completion Planning for May 1ststart date
Working on URG3000N SOP for mid-April Issues
and Problems so far Few sites not prepared for
install (space
and power issues) Handful of sampler startup
issues Some agencies without FTS to check 22
