4Gods Covenant With David
Review
(2 Samuel 7)
- Gods covenant with David (2 Samuel 7)
- David told Nathan the prophet that he wanted to
build God a house, i.e., for the ark - God told Nathan that David was not to build His
house, but God gave him 3 promises - Davids son (Solomon) would build His house
- Davids family would be a royal dynasty
- Davids seed throne would be established forever
- Davids son (Solomon) would build Gods house
- Davids family would be established as a royal
dynasty - Davids seed throne would be established forever
1.
5God's Plan Unfolding...
- God Promised a Savior
- He would come through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob,
Judah David - He will reign on the throne of David forever
6Note
- We closed our last lesson at 1 Chronicles 2920.
The last 10 verses (vss. 21-30) of 1 Chronicles
tells of Davids death and Solomons annointing.
However, there is one more rebellion that
occurred prior to Davids death. We will look at
that story now, but before we do we will note the
conditions in Israel as the books of 2
Samuel and 1 Chronicles closes and 1 Kings
and 2 Chronicles opens.
7Note
- David was old, frail, and near death. He had
prepared Israel for the building of the temple
and announced to all Israel that Solomon was
Gods chosen to follow him on the throne.
Therefore, Solomon had been named as Davids
successor, but he had not officially begun his
reign as king.
8The Reign of Solomon
The Rebellion of Adonijah
(1 Kings 11-53,1 Chron. 2922-25)
Give us a King Page 108
9Note
- Despite the fact that David was still living at
the time, we include this story with the reign of
Solomon because the rebellion was more about
Solomon as Davids successor than about David
himself. Also, we will see that it was Solomon
who dealt with those involved.
10The Rebellion of Adonijah
- David was bedridden and his health failing
- His servants brought a beautiful young virgin,
Abishag the Shunammite, to him - She became one of his wives although they did not
have a true husband-wife relationship - She cared for him in his last days

12The Rebellion of Adonijah
- Meanwhile, Adonijah decided to take Davids
throne for himself - He exalted himself
- He was a handsome man
- He prepared himself a chariot and 50 men to run
before him (remind you of someone else?)
13The Rebellion of Adonijah
- Adonijah was Davids 4th son
- Amnon was killed by Absaloms servants
- Chileab is only mentioned once and likely died

fleeing from Saul and was killed by Doeg at
Sauls command - Abiathar fled and joined David who protected him
from Saul and made him co-high priest with Zadok
during his reign - Abiathar was loyal to David during the rebellion
of Absalom and served as part of his spy system
17The Rebellion of Adonijah
- Adonijah held a special sacrifice and feast just
outside of Jerusalem - He invited the leading men of Judah
- Except for Nathan, Benaniah, the mighty men, or
Solomon

- Nathan and Bathsheba appraoched David when they
learned of the rebellion - At Davids order Benaiah took the Cherethites
Pelethites and escorted Solomon to Gihon (a
spring just outside the city wall) - Zadok Nathan annointed him king
19The Rebellion of Adonijah
- The rebellion ended immediately
- All of Adonijahs guests fled in fear
- Adonijah first fled to the altar of the LORD and
then came and bowed before Solomon - Solomon spared his life and sent him home

221 Kings 21-4
Now the days of David drew near that he should
die, and he charged Solomon his son, saying "I
go the way of all the earth be strong,
therefore, and prove yourself a man. And keep the
charge of the LORD your God to walk in His ways,
to keep His statutes, His commandments, His
judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written
in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all
that you do and wherever you turn that the LORD
may fulfill His word which He spoke concerning
me, saying,'If your sons take heed to their way,
to walk before Me in truth with all their heart
and with all their soul,' He said,'you shall not
lack a man on the throne of Israel.'
23David's Last Charge to Solomon
- David gave Solomon advice concerning specific
individuals - Joab do not let his gray hair go down to the
grave in peace - Sons of Barzillai show kindnessand let them
be among those who eat at your table - Shemei do not hold him guiltlessbut bring his
gray hair down to the grave with blood
241 Kings 210-12
So David rested with his fathers, and was buried
in the City of David. The period that David
reigned over Israel was forty years seven years
he reigned in Hebron, and in Jerusalem he reigned
thirty-three years. Then Solomon sat on the
throne of his father David and his kingdom was
firmly established.
