Title: KingdomFocused Church

1
The Work of the Church Leadership Team
Presented by Ed Gilman
2
Church Leadership Team
  • The Church Leadership Team is the new name for
    the old Church Council.
  • It is the church leadership group responsible for
planning prioritizing the work of the church.
  • Although the team may vary from church to church,
its basic membership is typically pastor, staff,
    program chairpersons, deacon chairman, finance
    chairman, personnel chairman.

3
Church Leadership Team
  • A major goal of the team is to use the gifts
abilities of church leaders more effectively.
  • The team should focus on the total work of the
church serve as an advisory team to the pastor
    church.
  • The leadership team does not have authority over
the organizations committees of the church.

4
1- We cant do it its impossible! JOHN 65-9
When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming
toward him, he said to Philip, "Where shall we
buy bread for these people to eat?" He asked
this only to test him, for he already had in mind
what he was going to do. Philip answered him,
"Eight months' wages would not buy enough bread
for each one to have a bite!" Another of his
disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke
up, "Here is a boy with five small barley loaves
and two small fish, but how far will they go
among so many?"
5
2- God will do it if we let Him. JOHN 610-11
Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was
plenty of grass in that place, and the men sat
down, about five thousand of them.

Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and
distributed to those who were seated as much as
they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
6
3- God will provide even more than we need.
JOHN 6 12-13
When they had all had enough to eat, he said to
his disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left
over. Let nothing be wasted."
So
they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with
the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by
those who had eaten.

QUESTION What is the
Kingdom of God?
The Kingdom of God is not a physical kingdom,
it is an eternal, spiritual
kingdom it is the reign of Jesus Christ as Lord
in our lives it is the Holy Spirit working in us
and around us so that we will know and do the
will of the Father... it is the abundant life
it is life to the max!
8
An Eternal Kingdom
Your kingdom is and everlasting kingdom Your
rule is for all generations.
Psalm 14513 How great
are his signs, how mighty his wonders!
His
kingdom is an eternal kingdom his dominion
endures
from generation to generation.
Daniel 43 Therefore, my brothers, be all the
more eager to make your calling and election
sure. For if you do these things, you will never
fall, and you will receive a rich welcome into
the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ. 2 Peter 110-11
9
A Spiritual Kingdom
Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one
can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of
water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh,
but the
Spirit gives birth to
spirit. John 35-6 Once, having been
asked by the Pharisees when the

kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, "The
kingdom
of God does not come with
your careful observation,
nor
will people say, 'Here it is,' or 'There it is,'
because the kingdom of God is within you."
Luke 1720-21 Dont you know
that you yourselves are Gods Temple and that
Gods Spirit lives in you? 1 Cor. 316
10
The Kingdom of God
The central focus of Jesus teaching, preaching,
and ministry, was the Kingdom
of God. He referred to
His followers as the church only twice, while
referring to the Kingdom nearly ninety times.
11
The Kingdom of God
Without a clear understanding of the Kingdom of
God
We often get so focused on the work
of
God that we fail to see God at work
around us. We
will try to do things for Him, and
dont
experience Him working through us. God may
have to work around us instead of through
us. ... And remember, God energizes His
Kingdom work.
12
Staying spiritually focused on the Kingdom
of God
1- The first essential is faith. Jesus said,
your heart must not be troubled. Believe
in God
believe also in Me. 2- The second essential is
love. Jesus said, by this all people will know
that you are My disciples, if you have love for
one another. John said, the one who does not
love does not know God, because God is love. 3-
The third essential is obedience. Jesus said,
if you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
13
The Kingdom of God
QUESTION What is the local church?
the people of God in a particular location,
serving in His Kingdom, under the Lordship of
Jesus Christ, to fulfill the Great Commission.
QUESTION What is its purpose?
through the power of God,
to grow the kingdom and
fulfill the Great
Commission
by making disciples, maturing believers,
and multiplying ministries.
14
Kingdom-Focused Church
  • Many churches today do not have a kingdom focus.
This means they dont have a Great Commission
    focus either.
  • Without this focus, the programs and ministries
of the church dont compliment one another, in
fact they often compete with one another.
  • Ask your average church member why they come to
church and you will get a great variety of
    answers.

15
News Flash
Kingdom-Focused Church
There is no perfect pastor! There is no
perfect church!
16
Looks like the pastor preached his
tithing sermon again.
17
Wheres my husband this morning? Right where you
buried him last week.
18
Kingdom-Focused Church
  • Every church is imperfect because it is made up
    of human beings.
  • Read the New Testament. Much of it is letters
from the Apostle Paul trying to solve local
    church problems.
  • When people join a church they bring all their
cultural and lifes baggage with them, it cant
    be separated.

You can be a Kingdom-Focused Church without being
perfect.
19
Kingdom-Focused Church
The Biblical model is
the Kingdom-Focused Church
  • Many church leaders try to copy a successful
    churchs model for ministry
    without considering that churchs
    context, leaders gifts, etc.
  • The correct answer to church growth, church
    maturity, or kingdom
    growth for your church is
  • 1- Know the Biblical model for the church.
  • 2- Understand how to conform your church to
    that Biblical model.

20
Kingdom-Focused Church
We trained hard, but it seemed that every time
we were beginning to form into teams, we would
reorganize. I was to learn later in life that we
tend to meet any new situation by reorganization
and what a wonderful method it can be for
creating the illusion of progress while producing
confusion, inefficiency and demoralization.
Petronious Arbiter, Greek Navy, 210 BC
21
Kingdom-Focused Church
  • A recent study of institutional reorganizations
found that 87 failed within the first two years.
  • Their problem, typically was that they focused on
mechanics and procedures rather than results.
  • Success comes when you have a clear vision of
what God wants from you and then you focus on
    that direction.

22
Kingdom-Focused Church
A church that multiplies disciples for the
Kingdom
makes disciples of Jesus Christ
out of unbelievers matures them in
their faith and walk multiplies them into
Gods kingdom as equipped, committed servants
23
One Example of a Church Discipleship Strategy
24
Kingdom-Focused Church
  • It is very easy for churchs to get sidetracked
    on good
agendas other than Gods. He only
    blesses His agenda,
    otherwise, you are on
    your own.
  • Think about it what is the key issue on earth
    today? (Economy, education, peace, justice,
    church growth?)

The central issue in the world today is

the advancement of the kingdom
of God through kingdom churches

it must be our
focus above everything else!
25
The Five Functions of the Church
How does a Kingdom-Focused Church work?
  • There are five functions that every church must
do in order to fulfill the Great commission.
  • Regardless of community context, ethnic makeup,
economics, etc, these five interrelated functions
are essential for establishing and holding a
    kingdom focus.

26
DISCIPLESHIP VERSE 42
Acts 2 38-47
EVANGELISM verses 38-41
PRAYER
FELLOWSHIP verses 42,46
The Five Functions of every
Kingdom-Focused Church
WORSHIP verse 47
MINISTRY verses 42-45
27
The Five Functions of the Church
1- Evangelism the process of sharing the gospel
with the lost and winning them to Christ,
enabling them to enter the kingdom of God. 2-
Discipleship a lifelong journey of obedience to
Christ that transforms a persons values and
behavior, and results in ministry to others. 3-
Fellowship it is the intimate spiritual
relationship that Christians share with God and
other believers through their relationship with
Jesus Christ.
28
The Five Functions of the Church
4- Ministry meeting another persons need in the
name of Jesus. 5- Worship any activity in which
believers experience God in a meaningful,
spiritually transforming way.
Worship is expressing our love to
God. Rick Warren
29
The Five Functions in a Christians Life
1- God wants me to be a member of His
family. This is fellowship. Following Christ
is not just a matter of believing, it also
includes belonging. You are
members of Gods own family and you
belong in Gods household with
every other member. Ephesians 219 2- God
wants me to be a model of His character. This
is discipleship. God wants every believer to
grow up (become spiritually mature) to become
like Christ in character. Maturity is not
measured by our knowledge of the Bible but by our
lifestyle (applying it to our life).
30
The Five Functions in a Christians Life
3- God wants me to be a minister of His
grace. This is service or ministry. God
expects us to use the gifts, talents, and
opportunities
He gives us to benefit others. God
intends for every believer to have a
ministry. 4- God wants me to be a messenger of
His love. This is evangelism. Once we are
born again we become messengers of the Good News.
There are only two things you cant do in heaven
that you can do on earth sin, and witness to
unbelievers which of these two do you think
Christ left us here on earth to do? Rick
Warren
31
The Five Functions in a Christians Life
5- God wants me to be a magnifier of His
name. This is worship. There is an inborn
urge in each person to worship. If we didnt
worship God we would find something else to
worship job,
family, money, sport, or ourselves. The church
helps provides people with things they
cannot find anywhere else in
the world - Worship helps people focus on
God. - Fellowship helps them face lifes
problems. - Discipleship helps fortify their
faith. - Ministry helps them find their
talents. - Evangelism helps them fulfill
their mission.
32
Kingdom-Focused Church
  • Jesus said, seek first the kingdom of God and
His righteousness, and all these things will be
    provided for you.
(God wants us to be before He
    wants us to do.)
  • By obeying God in faith and seeking His Kingdom
first, you will see God provide four kingdom
    results in the church.

True church growth changes lives and
is never a result of methods,
it is the result of the
supernatural activity of God.

  • The next step of a Kingdom-Focused Church is to
    understand its church culture.
  • Your culture develops from
  • - your style, history, traditions, and methods
    of the past,
  • - leadership of pastor, staff, key lay leaders
  • demographics of your community,
  • current health of the church (growing, stable,
declining), and the current health of the
    community of the present.

  • The final step in the process is to put the

    Kingdom-Focused Church concepts into
    practice.
  • Church practice is balancing the essential
    actions (methods)

church in the five functions of
    evangelism,

worship experience. Jesus went through all the
towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues,
preaching the good news of the kingdom, and
healing every disease and sickness. (Matthew

unbelievers can attend services and observe.

A Kingdom-Focused Church
A church that does what is important to the King.
A church that is driven by the Great Commission
as the mandate for its mission.
A church that adopts and intentionally implements
evangelism, discipleship, fellowship, ministry,
and worship as the functions needed to carry out
the mandate.
A church that utilizes balanced, connected church
practice strategies to implement the functions.
A church that experiences the work of God through
demonstrated Kingdom results.

I tell you the truth, if you have faith as
small as a mustard seed, you can say to this

move. Nothing will be impossible for you.

CHURCH PRACTICE GROUP ASSESSMENT

The following statements have been identified as
characteristics of churches with effective
ministries. To assess
your church, score each item as you perceive it
existing in th

Each score should reflect
how well your church is demonstrating the
characteristic, not just its existence in church
practice.

After
completing the scoring, transfer those scores to
the

We will build the purpose of our work upon the
mandate of the Great Commission.

We will carry out the Great Commission through
the church functions of evangelism, discipleship,
fellowship, ministry, and worship.

We will design our church practice around the
strategies of open groups, closed groups,
corporate worship, and ministry teams. An ongoing
evaluation of our ministries will be completed to
ensure balance and connection between the
strategies.

We will celebrate the work of God through us as
people come to know Christ as Savior (numerical
growth), as Christians grow in Christlikeness
(spiritual transformation), as Christians use
their gifts in ministry (ministry expansion), and
as the gospel is spread through missions (Kingdom
advance).
