History of Stilts
  • In 7th century B.C. a man in china who would
    entertain the first Song Emperor by walking and
    running with two long wooden poles attached to
    his legs
  • In late 1800s a man from France walked from
    Paris to Moscow completely on stilts

Hand Held Stilt
  • 2 varieties pole and string
  • Made of two long poles with a
  • foot support on them
  • The stilter holds the upper end
  • of the pole and the foot is
  • placed on the support

Peg Stilts
  • The most common type of stilt used by performers
  • Strap on the foot, ankle, and knee
  • Allows for great flexibility
  • Very light weight

  • Used for recreational or extreme stilting
  • Similar to the pogo stick

Danger
  • It would be extremely easy to slip, trip, and
    fall on stilts on a construction site.

How to Avoid Accidents

Guardrails
  • Guardrails help to eliminate falls on the jobsite
  • OSHA has rules regarding the height capacity
    while on and off stilts

OSHA 1926.451 (g) 4 ii
  • The top edge height of toprails shall be
    installed between 38 and 45 above platform
    surface. When conditions warrant, the height of
    the top edge may exceed the 45 height.
  • When workers are wearing stilts the guardrail
    system shall be increased an amount equal to the
    height of the stilt.

    flat and free from pits, holes and obstructions,
    such as debris, as well as other tripping and
    falling hazards.
