What is an internship?
  • An internship is a supervised work experience
    which enables students to practice classroom
    theory and intentional reflection in a
    professional setting.

Why do an internship?
  • Gain hands-on experience and develop skills that
    will give you an edge on the competition in your
    future job search. 
  • Test out the world of work to find your areas of
    strength and interest.
  • The opportunity to explore various career
    environments.
  • An opportunity to design your own
    experience-based course in an area that interests
    you!

Applying for an Internship
  • Create a resume using hartwick.optimalresume.com
    and have a career advisor review it before
    submitting to employers.
  • Read all of the application instructions and
    FOLLOW THEM.
  • Follow up on your application one to two weeks
    after submission.
  • If you have an interview, in person or on the
    phone, sign up for a mock interview with a career
    advisor to practice.
  • Write a thank you note after your interview.

Getting Credit for an Internship
  • Everything you need to know about getting credit
    can be found at http//www.hartwick.edu/x3247.xml
  • You must complete a Learning Agreement and
    receive final approval from CDE to be registered
    for an internship.

The Learning Agreement
  • Complete the Learning Agreement AFTER you have
    secured an internship.
  • YOU complete the Learning Agreement with
    assistance from your faculty supervisor and work
    supervisor.
  • It must include all signatures when submitted.
  • Follow all directions on the document.
  • Once the Learning Agreement is approved, Career
    Development will notify you that you have been
    registered.
  • If you need to make changes to the agreement, you
    must submit a change of agreement form, available
    on the web.
  • TIP Keep a copy of the LA for your records.

Getting a Grade for an Internship
  • In order to receive a grade for an internship a
    student must
  • Complete the hours at the internship site
  • Complete all academic components outlined in the
    Learning Agreement
  • Receive a formal evaluation from the work-site
    supervisor
  • Everything must be completed the deadline set by
    the Registrar, which is usually 2 months into the
    next semester, or you will receive an F.

At the Work-Site
  • Please remember that you are always on stage.
  • Be clear about what you want to get out of the
    internship.
  • Set up informational interviews with staff,
    research the company more before you start, read
    up on the field, etc.

Following Up
  • Please complete the Student Evaluation, which
    will be sent to you via SurveyMonkey at the end
    of your internship
  • Meet with a career advisor to process the
    experience and discuss additional steps toward
    your career development.
