  • 1 out of 9 women will get breast cancer.
  • Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women
    and the second deadliest.
  • 187,000 women were diagnosed in 2005
  • 41,000 women died in 2005
  • US has the highest incidence rate in the world.

Risk Factors
  • Age
  • Family History
  • Diagnosis of a mother or sister increases your
    risk by 2-3 times.
  • Exposure to radiation
  • X-rays
  • Personal History
  • No Pregnancies

  • Heavy Alcohol Consumption
  • More than one drink per day.
  • Early Puberty
  • Beginning your period younger than 12 years old.

Prevention Measures
  • Less fat in your diet.
  • 30 of caloric intake
  • Eat foods high in Vitamins
  • A, C and E
  • Eat foods high in fiber.
  • Limit charbroiled, smoked and salted foods.

  • Limit alcohol consumption
  • 1 drink per day
  • Maintain ideal weight.
  • Exercise
  • 4 or more hours/week to decrease hormones
  • Perform regular breast self examinations!

Breast Screening
  • At the age of 18
  • Regular monthly breast self examinations.
  • Clinical breast exam. once every 3 years
  • At the age of 30-40
  • Regular monthly breast self examinations.
  • Clinical breast exam once a year.
  • Mammogram once a year.

Why Self Examine?

BSE Lying Down
  • Lie down on your back with a pillow under your
    shoulder.
  • Use pads of your fingers to check breast.
  • Using light, medium, and firm pressure in a
    circle without lifting the fingers off the skin.
  • Follow up and down pattern.

BSE Tips
  • BSEs can be conveniently completed in the shower.
  • The best time to perform BSEs is after your
    period.
  • Make sure to check your collarbone and armpit.
  • Check nipple for discharge.

BSE In Front of the Mirror
  • Look for any changes or abnormalities.
  • Hold arms at sides.
  • Hold arms above head.
  • Hold hands on hips
  • Tighten chest muscles
  • Bend forward

What you might feel
  • Small beads scattered throughout the breast.
  • Cysts large round fluid filled sacks.
  • Fibroadenomas benign masses of fibrous tissue.
  • Usually found in both breasts.
  • Irregularly shaped area of thicker tissue.
  • Hyperplasia overgrowth of breast tissue.
  • Although these conditions are benign, they should
    still be brought to the attention of a healthcare
    professional.

Malignant tumors
  • A cancerous growth on the breast often feels hard
    and is not painful.
  • Will be found only in one breast.
  • Will not be freely movable.
  • Seek medical counsel ASAP to confirm
  • diagnosis and discuss options with a physician.
