Have you ever wondered your dogs eyes are blue
in a photograph, but humans eyes are red? Or
have you ever heard someone say Dont give your
dog chocolate or they will get sick? Is that
really true? Can they have any chocolate at all
or is even a little bit bad for them? How might
we know if theyve had chocolate, and what can we
do to help them get better?

• These are all questions that I was curious about.
  Because I dont know the answers, I decided to
  find out. I researched information for each
  question on the internet, and here is what I
  found out

'Red Eye'
'Blue Eye'

• The term red eye is given when a person looks
  directly at the camera while the picture is being
  taken. When the flash goes off, there is a
  reflection of the blood vessels in the persons
  retina. This causes a satanic look called red-
  reflex.
• People with light colored eyes usually display
  the worst red- eye affect in photographs.

Dogs' Eyes

• Dogs have a special reflective layer in the back
  of their eye called the tapetal layer. This layer
  helps enhance the dogs nocturnal vision.
• When incoming light enters a dogs eye, it passes
  through the retina and is reflected off this
  tapetal layer back through the retina. The color
  of this layer is the reason for the color we see
  in pictures. Dogs can have green, yellow, or blue
  layers, and some may not have any at all. No
  tapetal layer results in the red- reflex we see
  in humans.

Reasons for blue- eye
Young puppies often exhibit blue eye because
their eyes are not yet developed.
It takes the structures in their eyes between 6
and 8 months to fully mature.

Can dogs have chocolate?

• The severity of the dogs illness depends on
  their body weight, how much and what kind of
  chocolate, is ingested.

• There is a chemical in chocolate called
  theobromine. This is toxic to dogs when they
  intake anywhere from 100-150mg/kg of their body
  weight.
• Example it would take 8 ounces of milk chocolate
  to
• be fatal to a 10 pound dog. But this same 8
  ounces of milk chocolate would barely harm a 70
  pound dog. For a 70 pound dog, 4 ¾ pounds would
  be fatal.

Types of Chocolate

• Different types of chocolate have different
  levels of theobromine.

1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight ? Milk
Chocolate 1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight ?
Semisweet Chocolate 1 ounce per 9 pounds of body
weight ? Bakers Chocolate
In order of toxicity (most to least) Cocoa
beans, cocoa powder, plain/baking chocolate,
dark/bittersweet Chocolate, milk chocolate,
chocolate drink mixes, white chocolate

Signs/Symptoms

• Hyperexitability
• Hyperirritability
• Increased heart rate
• Increased Urination
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Nausea
• Seizures

Affects

• Central Nervous system
• Cardiovascular system
• Peripheral Nerves
• Diuretic Effects

How We Can Help

• There is no definite cure, but if ingested
• Induce vomiting (within 1-2 hours of ingestion)
• Medication to control seizures
• Oxygen therapy to help control the effects on
  their heart
• Activated charcoal- this may inhibit the
  absorption of the chocolate into the digestive
  system
• CALL YOUR VETERNARIAN!!!!
• - Tell them what type of chocolate your dog ate,
  how much they ate, how long ago they ate it, and
  how much your dog weighs.
