12External Contract Grant Funding
External grant funding is a means to an end, not
the end in itself. The end, of course, is the
support of advanced research, training of
graduate and undergraduate students AND the
creation and dissemination of NEW knowledge and
creative products. External funding provides
freedom and flexibility to the faculty member.
13- Joint initiative of the Office of the Provost and
the Office of the VP for Research - Major investments in faculty, graduate programs
and research infrastructure - Key component is the hiring of 200 additional
faculty through the vehicle of cluster hiring
efforts - Clusters must be interdisciplinary 5-8 hires per
cluster - 9 clusters are in play 56 faculty lines have
been authorized and 30 faculty have been hired
