15Here is an example of what your journal might
look like May 13, 1897 Today we set sail from
London in the HMS Fearless. We are going to
Egypt first, through the Mediterranean.
Lieutenant Winchester seems to be a very
accommodating and knowledgeable captain. Of
course, I am the niece of the Queen so he has to
be nice to me. We have a crew of 45 on our
little sloop and we should be near the Strait of
Gibraltar in about a week, if the weather
holds. May 20th. Weve made it to the
Mediterranean
16Im anxious to start my assignment for Aunt
Vicky, so Ive instructed Lieutenant Winnie to
find a colony I can visit in the Mediterranean.
We must have one, dont you think?
May 21 1897 Oh Jolly good! The Lieutenant says we
own Malta! So well go there first. Heres a
map of it.
17May 25th Today was quite enlightening. Malta is
a lovely little island Aunt. When we disembarked
in Valletta harbor, a lovely band played for us.
I did notice a large Catholic influence. I met
with the viceroy and he reminded me that we did
take over the island after we helped them defeat
Napoleon. At lunch in the Palace of the grand
masters, the Viceroy reminded me that St. Paul
himself was shipwrecked on the island and the
medieval knights also enjoyed the island as a
refuge and stopping point during the crusades.
18Now Aunt, for your information, I believe the
Maltese people are very loyal to the crown. The
viceroy gave me a Maltese cross and a beautiful
pin of a Maltese falcon to give to you to
celebrate your Diamond jubilee. May 26, 1897 I
can see why we have this island in our empire.
It is a perfect naval base and Im happy to
report that the base looked well kept after and
that the Admiral in charge was impressive. I do
think we should make it a point to keep these
sailors away from home at this base happy. On to
Egypt!
