Main Character

• The main character is Hope.She is 14 years old.
  She is a great waitress.She works at Welcome
  Staircase. She can balance six plates on one
  arm.She is really nice. Sometimes shes funny
  other times shes a little weird.

• Dena
• She is Hopes Mother.Hope does not live with her
  because Dena is not a good mother.

• Addie
• Addie takes care of Hope. She is also the cook at
  the dinner Hope works at.She is married to G.T

• G.T
• G.T is now Hopes father.He has leukemia.He is the
  owner of the Welcome Staircase.He is married to
  Addie. He is also the mayor.

• Braverman
• Braverman is Hopes boy friend.He is a cook at
  Welcome Staircase.

Setting

• It takes place in Wisconsin. At the Welcome
  Staircase.It is a nice Diner. G.T is the owner of
  The Welcome Staircase.
• Hope.Addie,and Baverman all work there.

The Tone/Mood of the Book

• Sometimes the book is a little intense.Like when
  you found out that G.Ts cancer had come back.
  Other times its sad,like when Hopes mother only
  stayed with her for a hour or two or when G.T..
  I will not tell you that, you have to read to
  find that out.

Beginning Plot

• Hope has just carved her name into the boarded up
  window of where she us to work.She now has to
  move to Wisconsin. She is not sure what will
  happen. When she gets their she does not feel so
  worried any more. She meets all of the people she
  will now be working with, she likes all of them.

Middle Plot

• Hope is trying to help G.T. become mayor. She is
  also going through the stage of should I be
  Bavermans girlfriend. She is still enjoying
  working at the diner. Addie is still making great
  food.

Ending Plot

• In the end G.T. does not win the election or so
  you think. His cancer does come back. G.T. also
  married Addie.G.T. adopts Hope too. She is really
  happy, know she has a dad.

• This book has 5 awards
• A Newbery Honor Book
• An ALS Notable Book
• An ALA Best Book for Young Adults
• And is a Winner of the Chirstopher Award

Recommendation

• I would recommend this book to 5th to 6th graders
  because it would be to hard to understand the
  book if you were younger. I would also recommend
  this book to both boys and girls because there
  are both boy and girl characters
