2
REDHEADS
  • This is an 800W Redhead luminaire.
  • Redheads are used on folding stands and the barn
doors can be moved to prevent unwanted light
    spillage.
  • You can add scrim to diffuse the light using pegs
and coloured gels to create lighting effects.

3
BLONDES
Blondes are similar to Redheads, but are much
larger and heavier. They take 2000W bulbs, and
are therefore much more powerful.
4
SETTING UP STANDS
This is an example of a stand for a Redhead
luminaire set up incorrectly. The legs are far
too close together, making the lamp unstable.
When setting up a stand for any luminaire, make
sure the legs at the bottom of the stand are
almost parallel to the floor. This will give the
lamp much more stability.
5
ELECTRICAL CABLE SAFETY
This is another example of a Redhead luminaire
set up incorrectly. The electricity cable should
never be stretched like this. If the cable is
left in this manner, someone is sure to fall over
it. Make sure that the cable hangs freely
underneath the fitting and if necessary use an
extension cable to reach a
plug socket safely.
6
STUDIO FLOODS
These lights offer less control over where the
light goes. There is no way of focusing a
luminaire of this type, although some fittings of
this type are fitted with barn doors.
7
CYC-LIGHTS
Essentially a Mini-Flood, these lamps are fitted
with bulbs that range in value from 150W to
500W. As their name suggests, they can be used
to light the Cyclorama or could also be used as
Back Lights.
8
FRESNELS
These luminaires have glass lenses that focus the
light into a spot or a flood. They are the
workhorse of the television lighting trade and
come in many shapes an sizes
9
HMIs
The Halogen-Metal-Iodide luminaire is an arc-lamp
Fresnel fitting. It offers three to five times
the illumination than a standard quartz lamp and
uses less power and develops less heat. However,
it does require two or three minutes to build up
to full illumination.
10
SOFTLIGHTS
Softlights provide a very even, cool lighting.
The white reflecting surface on the front
provides an extremely diffused light that is
useful for increasing the basic light levels
without effecting any highlighted or shadowed
areas.
11
BROADS
Broads are similar to Softlights, but the light
is not as diffused. The picture here shows a
fitting called an egg-crate that is designed to
minimise the amount of spill
from a Broad. Barn doors are often also used
with this type of luminaire.
12
FLUORESCENTS
Fluorescents are highly efficient luminaires that
use a mercury arc and a fluorescent phosphor
coating inside the tube. Different
variations of phosphor offer a range of hues from
cool to warm.
13
THREE POINT LIGHTING
KEY LIGHT Always use your most powerful light for
the Key. This is the principal source of
lighting for your frame. FILL LIGHT Used to
soften and remove shadows cast by the Key BACK
LIGHT Gives the character depth and separates
them from the background
14
THE LIGHTING DESK
The Light Processor Q24 controls all of the
fixed lighting in the Television Studio. It can
control twenty four separate lights
simultaneously, changing their brightness to any
required level using wall mounted dimmer packs.
15
BOOKING THE STUDIO
To book the studio, go to the equipment stores
and speak to Paul Cree, who is our student
placement for this year. They will have the
bookings diary for the studio, allowing you to
mutually agree a date and time for your sessions.
