Are there different types of carbs? 1) Simple
Quick Energy (sugar) 2) Complex Long Lasting
Energy (grains)
What are some sources of carbs? Bread,
Wheat, Rice, Pasta, Cereal, Oatmeal,
Fruits Veggies

Proteins
  • What do they do?
  • Help us grow, repair body tissue, form part of
    muscles and bones, form hormones

What are proteins made from? Amino Acids
What are some sources of protein? Meat, fish,
chicken, eggs, nuts, beans

Fats
  • What do they do?
  • Source of energy, protect organs, keep
  • us warm

Are there different types? 1) Saturated Raise
cholesterol (bad) 2) Unsaturated Found in
plants (good)
What are some sources of fats? Butter, cheese,
milk, oil, ice cream
Cholesterol waxy, fat substance in cells

Vitamins Minerals
What do they do? Keep us healthy, prevent
disease, cannot be produced by the body, come
from the earth

  • Vitamin A (carrots)

  • Vitamin C (fruit)

  • Riboflavin (milk)
  • Niacin (fish)

Water
  • What does it do?
  • Makes up blood, helps digestion, removes waste,
    regulates body temperature

What are some sources of water? Drinking water,
juice, soups, celery, most foods contain some
water

Your Diet
  • Your diet should contain
  • 40 Carbohydrates
  • Unused carbs turn into fat!!
  • Mostly complex carbs (whole grains)
  • 30 Proteins
  • 30 Fats
  • Mostly unsaturated fats
  • Too much bad fat contributes to
  • cholesterol

Fiber! (This is a type of Carb!)
  • Indigestible plant materials
  • Helps us go to the bathroom (yep 2)
  • Important for digestion
  • Reduces colon cancer heart disease
  • Prevents constipation

    stimulated by smell or sight
  • Calories units of heat that measure energy
    used by the body
  • Nutrient Deficiency shortage of a specific
    nutrient
