2
Whats VOIP?
  • Voice Over Internet Protocol
  • Communication through internet
  • Allows users to travel anywhere in the world and
still make and receive phone calls in places with
    internet access.
  • Examples Skype

3
Skype
  • Skype is a revolutionary voice-over-IP technology
that keeps bringing attention to its many unique
and impressive capabilities. The tools is in beta
and it is free to use (PC users only).
  • Ability to provide a reliable quality audio
connection over the Internet, may still be
reserved only for those on a particular good
Internet connection on even then not all the
    times.
  • It has high viral market value.

4
Skype Interface
  • Skype SMS
  • Skype web toolbar
  • Skype history logs
  • Skype voicemail
  • Skype chat
  • Skype video calling

5
Problems
  • 1. Connection Quality
  • 2. Complexity
  • 3.Security Privacy
  • 4. Technical knowledge

6
Connection Quality
  • Quality ? bandwidth problem
  • produce delays of several seconds
  • Asynchronous/ Traffic? one way direction( cant
    talk simultaneously)
  • Even with better connections, quality can
    occasionally be erratic
  • Incompatible? with newer software, sometimes only
    work for current version.
  • Firewall blocking
  • Lack of reliability? IP network always crash

7
Complexity
  • Need computer and software
  • Example Economic - companies save a goodly
amount on conference calls if this feature is
ever implemented. Other than that, not much for
    now.
  • Realistically, if you are in Italy and wanna talk
to someone in Canada, chances are it will be
easier for you to find a phone rather than a
computer with a relatively decent connection and
a headset. This may change eventually.

8
Security Privacy
  • Security problem
  • -Someone may attempt to decrypt a Skype-based
    voice conversation
  • Privacy problem
  • -Anyone can call you, not only the people on
    your list.

9
Technical Knowledge
  • Other than people who are familiar with
technology, the rest of people doesnt know about
    Skype
  • Technology illiterate? hard to use

10
Overall problems
  • 1. Connection Quality
  • 2. Complexity
  • 3.Security Privacy
  • 4. Technical knowledge

11
Main Solutions
  • 1. Target senior people and illiterate people
  • 2. Increase Bandwidth
  • 3. Innovation

12
Target older people/ IT illiterate people
  • With user friendly based software (fewer clicks
easier setup such as inputting numbers, similar
    features as phone).
  • S- large senior age population
  • W- time consuming for training and costly for
    developing software that fits them
  • O- other competitors may not notice the trend of
increase in senior population (big segment)
  • T- other competitors may have gone ahead of us.

13
Increase Bandwidth
  • Increase cable lines, increase satellites,
    partnership with major telecommunication company
(we provide customers, they provide us with
customers), investing more budget on setup
    advanced firewall program
  • S- faster connection, better flow, synchronous
(two-way traffic ), better security protection
    for end-users
  • W- costly for additional cable line or bandwidth.
    Smaller profit margin
  • O- increase number of users because there will be
less lagging while talking through internet.
  • T- other bigger competitors may have more
financial power to implement broader bandwidth

14
Innovation
  • Compact-Skype equipment (like MP3 player, before
its only limited for PC, right now you can carry
    it around)
  • S-Large market potential because its a brand new
product. (we are the early innovator)
  • W-may not function properly yet (dont have many
    trials)
  • O- more people use Skype since its easy to carry
    around.
  • T- have potential does not mean it will be
    accepted by consumers
  • In third world countries, they do not have enough
    internet access.
  • Time needed to develop this product.

15
Chosen StrategyInnovation
  • Pros
  • Early start.
  • Patented.
  • Since internet globalizes, we can get access to
    internet almost everywhere.
  • Like cell-phone, but cheaper price.
  • Having computer is not a necessity.
  • Huge internet users in North America.
  • Future opportunities.
  • Cons
  • Might be a passer-by technology (like Mini-Disc).
  • Possibility that it will take some time for
consumers to realize and adopt our product. Thus,
    its risky.

16
Conclusion
  • Large untapped market, large potential
  • As an innovator, we have the benefit for a few
    years (protected by patent)
  • There will be an abundance of opportunities in
the future for this product, such as Integration
    of Skype with cell-phones
