Reading Period Policies
  • Labor is not cancelled during reading periods.
  • During Reading Period, departments have the
    flexibility to excuse students from labor if
    arrangements have been made to make up missed
    hours.

Reading Period Dates 2006-2007
  • Mid-Term Reading Period
  • October 9th-10th
  • Fall Final Reading Period
  • December 8th
  • Spring Final Reading Period
  • May 18th

Maintaining Essential Labor
  • There are times in which Labor is cancelled
  • College wide symposia
  • Mountain Day
  • Labor Day
  • However, departments providing essential services
    to the college and community may require students
    to work during these college events. Some areas
    that provide essential services are
  • Boone Tavern
  • Boone Tavern Gift Shop
  • Residence Halls
  • Food Services
  • Hutchins Library
  • College Farms
  • Child Development Lab
  • Log House Gifts

This is not a complete list. Other labor areas
and services could be deemed essential labor for
Berea College.

Vacation Period Dates 2006-2007

Thanksgiving
  • Status Form - Only students working outside their
    primary or secondary department must process a
    new status form.
  • Report of Hours - Students working in their
    regular department should use a blue card
    (Unrecorded Time Card) to report hours. Students
    not in their regular department will be reported
    on the Department Report of Hours Worked as a
    secondary position.
  • Rate - Students who have worked their required
    hours to date and work 10 or more hours during
    the break will receive 1.50 per hour plus their
    regular rate.

Christmas
  • Status Form-All students must process a new
    status form.
  • Report of Hours-Students will appear on the
    Department Summary of Hours Worked form as
    secondary positions with a grade of SR. Do not
    mix Christmas hours with regular hours.
  • Pay Rate-Students are paid a special rate of
    5.15 per hour.
  • No Student may work during Christmas Break unless
    they are registered for a Short Term Class.

Short Term Break
  • Status Form-Only students working outside their
    Spring Term primary or secondary position must
    process a new status form.
  • Report of Hours-These hours are reported as
    Spring Term hours and paid during the first
    spring payroll.
  • Pay Rate-Students are paid their Spring Term pay
    rate.

Spring Break
  • Status Form-Only students working outside their
    primary or secondary positions must process a
    status form.
  • Report of Hours - Students working in their

Summer
  • Students attending Summer School are subject to
    the same labor requirements as during the regular
    term.
  • Some labor assignments can be labor only.
    Labor only students may work full-time (40
    hours per week) for 12 weeks or less. Labor
    only students may take one class with prior
    approval from their supervisor and work a minimum
    of 34 hours. Note One exception to this is if
    the class is a one month class. If so, students
    cannot work labor only during the class.
  • Note While the summer is generally 14 weeks, a
    2 week vacation is encouraged.

Summer Pay Rates
  • Students in Summer School earn 5.15 per hour.
  • Labor only students earn 6.50 per hour.
  • Note A higher pay rate is available for labor
    only students. Please contact the Student
    Payroll Office at ext. 3317 for more information.
