3Terminology
- What is the Rollout?
- The process of receiving, staging, delivering
and installing a new workstation for a faculty
or staff member. - What is the Refresh?
- The installation of a new workstation for
faculty or staff to replace their existing
workstation. - What is the Cascade?
- The transition of an existing rollout
workstation to other university uses.

5When will the Second Wave Start?
The second wave will begin in late October /
early November. The late semester start is due
to a new Dell model line called GX280 now being
configured for the campus.
6Who will be Refreshed in this Wave?
All remaining rollout qualified faculty/staff who
were not refreshed in the first wave. Rollout
qualified is FT (1.0 FTE) faculty and staff at or
above 0.5 FTE.
7What hardware is being installed?
No other peripherals, such as monitors, printers,
or mice are being installed with this refresh.
8When will monitors and printers be replaced?
Funding has been made available over the next
year and a half to replace out of warranty
monitors and local printers.
9How will monitors and printers be replaced?
Replacement of the monitor and printers will be
done through a separate rollout process. Users
will be contacted for an installation
appointment.
10What software is being installed?
MS Windows XP SP2 MS Office 2003 MS Internet
Explorer McAfee Anti-Virus Diskkeeper 7.0 Media
Player 9.0 Informed Filler 3.5 Spybot
Anti-Spyware
Other software that is not part of the image can
be installed if the media and license codes are
provided at the time of installation.
11How will users be notified?
Once the user selection has been made, the users
will be notified via email from the Help Desk.
A password is provided so users can access their
email, Blackboard, and portal the day of the
installation (when systems are being configured).
12Will there be reminders?
13What will happen on installation day?
On the day of the installation, the users
password will be changed.
The Help Desk will only visit the desktop on the
day of the installation.
The user need not be present for installation.
14How will the workstations be installed?
- The technician will
- Copy the contents of your old drive to an Old
Data directory
- Set up the personal settings in Outlook, MS
Office, and the internet browser
- Install peripheral printers, scanners, and
drives
- Install other licensed software when media and
license code is provided
15What will happen to the old workstation?
Workstations cannot be left in the department as
they are already allocated to other university
uses.

lab located workstations that are beneath the
minimum hardware configuration will be replaced.

hardware, the following software will be
installed on non-lab workstations

Anti-Spyware
Other software that is not part of the image can
be installed if the media and license codes are
provided at the time of installation.
23What will happen to the old workstation?
Workstations cannot be left in the department as
they pose a severe security risk to the
university computing infrastructure.
24How will these non-lab cascadedworkstations be
supported?
- The Help Desk will
- Install and move the computers (when necessary)
- Register the workstation on AD/ACAD and maintain
hardware of computer - Install and maintain standard software like
Windows XP, Office 2003, InternetExplorer,
Spybot, EPO, Timbuktu, etc. - Unlock case for installation of additional
internal hardware like video cards, tv-tuners,
modems, etc. - The department technician will
- Be made administrator on the workstation
- Transfer or backup data from older computer(s)
- Install and maintain non-standard software like
IIS, SQL Server, Visual Studio, Photoshop,
Quark, firewalls, OCR software, entertainment
software, etc. - Install and maintain external peripherals like
printers, scanners, cameras, etc - Install and maintain additional internal hardware
like video cards, tv-tuners, etc.
25How will these lab located cascaded workstations
be supported?
- The department technician will
- Add the workstations to ACAD domain and
administer the workstation - Physically install the computer
- Maintain hardware and software of computer
- Install and maintain standard software like
Windows XP, Office 2003, Internet Explorer,
Spybot, EPO, Timbuktu, etc. - Transfer or backup data from older computer(s)
- Install and maintain non-standard software like
IIS, SQL Server, Visual Studio,Photoshop, Quark,
firewalls, OCR software, entertainment software,
etc. - Install and maintain external peripherals and
internal hardware. - The Help Desk will
- Coordinate delivery installation times with the
local technician - Pickup local workstations identified as beneath
hardware minimums at time ofdelivery.
26Questions?
What is the Minimum Hardware configuration? For
PCs, this is a 233 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 1GB of open
space, and a working CD-ROM. For Macs, this is
a G3 processor with 128 MB RAM, 1 GB open space,
and a working CD-ROM.
When will the Cascade start? We will be
contacting departments for workstation
replacement early December 2004.
