Public-Key Encryption
  • History
  • Pre World War One
  • Radio Signals, very insecure
  • 2 Sides, Simple Structure (Us and Them)
  • Manual/Mechanical Cryptography
  • Post World War One
  • Shift to Electronic Cryptography
  • Telephones/ secure lines (shielded, not
    encrypted)
  • Many Sides, No structure (The Internet)

Public-Key Encryption
  • History
  • The first asymmetric key cryptosystem was
published in 1976 by Whitfield Diffie and Martin
    Hellman.
  • Since the 1970s, a large number and variety of
encryption, digital signature, key agreement, and
other techniques have been developed in the field
    of public key cryptography.

8
Public-Key Encryption
  • Products
  • PGP(Pretty Good Privacy)
  • The first released version of PGP, by designer
and developer Phil Zimmermann, became available
    in 1991.
  • Originally designed for BBS use, now used mainly
    for email.
  • Later became the OpenPGP Standard, due to use
    wide spread use

9
Public-Key Encryption
  • Products
  • GPG(Gnu Privacy Guard)
  • Released on September 7, 1999
  • Fully OpenPGP Compliant
  • Included with nearly all BSD's and Linux distros.
  • Ported to Windows in 2000
  • Provides both Digital Signature and Encryption
    Abilities
  • Public Keys typically exchanged via email or
    key-servers

10
Public-Key Encryption
  • Products
  • SSH (Secure Shell)
  • Common nix/BSD utility
  • Uses Public-Key Cryptography
  • Provides encrypted authentication and a secure
    data tunnel
  • Additional Features Reverse Tunnels, Encrypted
    Port Forwarding, Secure FTP subsystem.
