• The first asymmetric key cryptosystem was
  published in 1976 by Whitfield Diffie and Martin
  Hellman.
• Since the 1970s, a large number and variety of
  encryption, digital signature, key agreement, and
  other techniques have been developed in the field
  of public key cryptography.

• PGP(Pretty Good Privacy)
• The first released version of PGP, by designer
  and developer Phil Zimmermann, became available
  in 1991.
• Originally designed for BBS use, now used mainly
  for email.
• Later became the OpenPGP Standard, due to use
  wide spread use
