Introduction
  • Internet is the highest achievement of man
  • All information one needs from anywhere in the
    world is merely a keyboard away!.
  • For medical Professionals it gives access to
    reference libraries, research materials, access
    journals, discussion with experts, tutorials,
    research, even job hunting all over the world!!
    All without geographical or other limitations.

?
  • Not an organization, place, or object.
  • No body owns Internet, not even any Government.
    Virtual Global Society
  • Internet is simply collection of thousands of
    interconnected small computer networks around the
    globe all using the same software protocol
    (FTP/IP) so as to exchange information uniformly
    easily.

  • Efficient Cheapest way to communicate.
  • No barriers regional, political or other.
  • More than 20 million people are on internet.
  • And is increasing tremendously every day!
  • it is estimated that by year 2003 anyone with a
    telephone line will have Internet address?.

  • Everyone is connected to everyone else..
  • Network owners produce and sell access.
  • ISOC - Internet Society - sets guidelines
  • IAB - Internet Architecture Board - controls the
    standards.
  • IETF - Internet Engineering Task Force. Voluntary
    organization.Improvements.

  • 1969 - US Defence dept. (ARPANET) at UCLA
    university.(IP protocol standard.)
  • 1972 - National Sci. Foundation (NSFnet)
  • 1989 - Commercial International Membership eg.
    Compuserve, ATT, etc)
  • 1992 - Tim Berners Lee of CERN lab, Geneva -
    started World Wide Web.
  • 1994 - Population explosion on net with many
    countries providing access.

  • Get membership - Institute , commercial
  • Type of access Dialup, BBS, Direct Leased line
    (64k/128k), PSTN connections.
  • Personal computer - any model, speed etc.
  • Modem - high speed is better not essential.
  • Telephone line - local access (no need for 0)
  • TCP/IP transfer protocol (part of new OS).

  • Infobahn - Information Super Highway
  • Web, net, Cyberspace, Cybernetics, Netiquette,
    web, Web Surfing.
  • Online - Means over the internet, while
    connected. (off line - is internet information
    when not connected).
  • Home page First screen of information of a site.
    (hyperlinked to other pages)

  • Email - Electronic Mail similar to ordinary mail
    (snail mail)
  • Listservs - Listing Service (auto email).
  • FTP - File Transfer Protocol, Telnet
  • Usenet - New Groups - Forum of people with common
    interest share information.
  • Gophers (go for) - Table of contenets
  • WWW - World Wide Web - most popular (Graphic
    Interface using http html)

  • Idea of Tim Berners Lee at CERN - European
    nuclear physics lab. 1991
  • Graphical user interface with hyper links to
    other information both text, graphics, sound,
    video etc. starts at homepage
  • Links takes us from one computer to another
    located on other side of globe without
    geographical limitation just by click of mouse!!
    (Reason for its popularity)

Terminology in WWW
  • HTTP - Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
  • Graphical interface using special text which when
    clicked by mouse bring more information related
    to the text.
  • Hyper Text have links to other pages located on
    the same computer or any other computer anywhere
    in the world. Links are also built into pictures
    and drawings for easy navigation. (Hypermedia)

  • Electronic mail. Most popular, cheapest,
    efficient very very fast(few seconds!!)
  • Everyone connected to internet gets automatically
    a E-mail address.
  • Needs special software. Outlook express
  • POP3, SMTP (post office protocols)

    internet - destination server - mail box - user

    are unique combination of alphaneumeric
    characters and symbols.

  • name User ID
  • Domain is the Internet Service Provider
  • service is abbreviation of type of service eg.
    Com-commercial, gov-Government etc.
