Paired Reading

• This technique uses joint reading aloud between
  two individuals. They sit together and read a
  story aloud simultaneously.
• One individual serves as a model of fluent
  reading.
• Grades K-5 During Reading

Procedure

• The student and the teacher select a text that is
  interesting and not too long. Paired reading
  needs to be short

Procedure cont.

• Before beginning, the teacher and the student
  decide on a sign for the student to give when he
  is ready to read on his own and one for when he
  needs help.
• (We devised using a note card with red for stop
  reading and green for read along.)

Procedure cont.

• The teacher and the student read the text in
  unison.
• The teacher sets the pace that is appropriate for
  the text, modeling intonation and phrasing.
• The teacher can move his/her finger along the
  line of print if necessary.

Procedure cont.

• As the student gains success, he signals the
  teacher to stop reading aloud using the card.
• The student continues on his own until he needs
  help again.

Modification

• Teacher divides the class into two groups and
  establish pairs for reading, called partner
  reading.
