NEW HORIZONS MODEL HIGH SCHOOL PURPOSE
It is the purpose of New Horizons High School
(NHHS) to provide differentiated, standards
driven instruction to students who are best
served in this non-traditional style of learning.

    with school work.
  • WASC accredited School.
  • Excellent teacher to student ratio of 20 to 1.
  • High standards for academics.
  • 18 year olds are not released without a parent
    signing them out in the front office.

GRADE REPORTING
  • Every three weeks, there is a formal grade
    report provided to students/family. This is
    called a PAR check. (Productive Academic Rate)
  • One credit is expected to be earned in each class
    every three weeks.
  • Two credits are expected to be earned in each
    class every six weeks.
  • Involvement in student activities is based on
    these grade checks. Students must be on PAR to
    participate in field trips, cross-age mentoring
    and Peace Crew United or PCU.

ATTENDANCE ISSUES
  • Students need to be clocked in by 900
    a.m.(school starting time) or they are considered
    tardy. Even one minute late is considered tardy.
  • For every three tardies, students must serve a
    detention arranged by administration.
  • If students have numerous tardies, possible
    changes to their schedule will be arranged by
    administration.
  • Families will always be notified when a student
    has an absence or is habitually late.
  • The attendance rate at NHHS is tops in the
    Banning School Unified District

VISITING OTHER CAMPUSES
  • NHHS students do NOT have access to their former
    school unless it is granted by that schools
    administration. You are a visitor and must
    follow the proper procedures if you want to enter
    the site.
  • Do not loiter on or around the campus before or
    after school.
  • Students are subject to discipline from NHHS
    administration if they cause a disruption at
    another site.
  • If you are enrolled in ROP on a different site,
    you will need to be sure to check on the proper
    procedure for entering campus.
  • Your right to enter the campus can be revoked if
    you cause a disruption.

DRESS CODE ENFORCED AT ALL CAMPUSES

BP 5132 Students Dress Grooming
The Board of Trustees believes that appropriate
dress and grooming contribute to a productive
learning environment. The Board expects students
to give proper attention to personal cleanliness
and to wear clothes that are suitable for the
school activities in which they participate.
Students clothing must not present a health or
safety hazard or a distraction which would
interfere with the educational process.

DRESS CODE IS ENFORCED ON OUR CAMPUS
BANNING USD Administrative Regulation
  • All students are expected to present themselves
    in an orderly manner, conducive to the
    advancement of education. Appearance should be
    neat and acceptable. Items that are disruptive
    or could cause situations that would diminish the
    safety of students will be prohibited.
  • The district administration will determine that
    nature of gang dress and paraphernalia in
    continued consultation with Banning Police
    Department and District Office personnel. The
    district may set further specifics for rules
    relative to the dress and appearance of students,
    which will be strictly enforced.

Students are expected to wear of display the
following
  • Clothing that is hemmed and free from tears, rips
    and holes.
  • Clothing that covers undergarments, the back and
    the entire midriff at all times.
  • Dresses, skirts and shorts that are long enough
    to cover buttocks and upper thigh when walking,
    sitting, bending or reaching.
  • School and personal property (i.e. notebooks,
    pee-chees, backpacks) that are free of graffiti.
  • Clothing and accessories worn in the manner in
    which they were designed to be worn.
  • Appropriate shoes at all times. Slippers and
    thongs (flip-flops) are not to be worn.

NOT ALLOWED

Examples of Dress Code Violations
  • Spiked or studded jewelry of any kind, including
    ankle bracelets, chokers, rings,gloves and belts.
  • Wallets or chokers with any form of chain.
  • Long hanging belts.
  • Overly brief or tight garments (such as
    halter-tops, tube-tops, bathing suit tops or
    muscle shirts), spaghetti straps, strapless,
    off-the shoulder, or fishnet see-through
    garments.
  • Bib overalls with straps unbuckled.
  • Oversized, sagged, or baggy pants, shirts or
    clothing garments of any kind.
  • Belt buckles displaying letters or numbers.
  • Hairnets, bandanas, wave caps or other headgear
    is inappropriate.
  • Clothing that is unsafe, lewd, indecent, vulgar,
    obscene or gang-related.
  • Clothing that is disruptive to the educational
    process or the orderly operation of school.

DRESS CODE VIOLATIONS CONT.
  • Student dress displaying emblems lettering, or
    pictures pertaining to gangs, drugs, tobacco,
    alcohol, sex, death, mutilation, violence, or a
    gangs silent code.
  • (Specific examples of prohibited symbols, logos
    organizations, etc. include, but are
  • not limited to 69, SUR, 13,18th Street, LR,
    KKK, KR W, any swastika symbol, symbols
  • advocating SKIN, any iron cross. The list of
    prohibited type of attire can be updated at any
  • time, as per BUSD policy and Law Enforcement
    Agency).
  • Any clothing considered by administration/law
    enforcement agencies to be gang related.
  • Clothing items that can be interpreted as
    degrading or offensive to any gender, culture,
    religious or ethnic group.
  • Hair styles considered disruptive to the
    educational process.
  • Sunglasses may not be worn in the classroom.
  • The term sagged pants means that the waistline
    of the pants is located below the hipbone of the
    student. With the pants correctly worn, the
    crotch of the pants will not hang away from the
    body. Properly fitted pants, incorrectly worn
    (below the hipbone), are considered sagged
    pants.
  • The term baggy pants means that the waistline
    of the pants, located at the hipbone of the
    student, when pulled and pinched will gather more
    than one inch of material. Properly fitted pants
    will not gather more than one inch of material.

Attention 10th, 11th and 12th graders
  • If you have NOT passed the English or Math
    portion of the CAHSEE test, you will be assigned
    mandatory classes.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS -
  • ENGLISH 40 credits of English in grade 9 12
    and be enrolled in English every semester.
  • SOCIAL SCIENCE 30 credits of social science in
    grades 9 12, including the following
    specifically required courses Two semester of
    World History, Two semesters of U.S. History, One
    semester of Government and One semester of
    Economics.
  • MATHEMATICS 30 credits of mathematics in grades
    9 12, and be enrolled in a standards based
    mathematics courses, including the following
    specifically required courses Algebra 1 and
    Geometry.
  • SCIENCE 20 credits of science in grades 9 12.
    Ten of those credits are in Life Science and 10
    credits in Physical Science.
  • PHYSICAL EDUCATION 20 credits of P.E. in grades
    9 12.
  • FINE ARTS OR FOREIGN LANGUAGE 10 credits in
    fine arts or foreign language in grades 9 12.
  • HEALTH/ DRIVERS ED 10 credits.
  • APPLIED ARTS 10 credits.
  • ELECTIVES 60 credits.
  • TOTAL CREDITS 230 required for graduation.
  • EXIT EXAM FOR THE Classes of 2006 and later
    Beginning in the 2005-06 school year and each
    year thereafter, each student completing grade 12
    shall successfully pass the state exit
    examinations in language arts and mathematics as
    a condition of high school graduation. Students
    shall take the exit examination in grade 10 and
    may take the examination upon notice from
    administration until each section of the
    examination has been pass.

OPTIONS FOR ADDITIONAL CREDITS -
  • Senior Portfolio/Exit Interview
  • ROP classes.
  • Work Experience.
  • Peace Crew United (PCU) is a volunteer peer
    mediation program. NHHS students are trained to
    resolve conflicts at various schools in the
    Banning Unified School District during the school
    day. Students are responsible to make up any
    work that they miss while on duty at another
    school. Sign-ups will be available in the front
    office during the first week of school.
  • Cross-age mentoring is arranged through Cindy
    Flanagan for NHHS to help classroom teachers at
    other school sites.

  • WORK EXPERIENCE

Sign up if you are 16, have a job, and want to
earn elective credits.
Mr. To, our counselor, is the Work Experience
Teacher. You have the option of earning elective
credits if you are working. You will have to
bring in your pay stubs as proof that you are
working. The number of credits is based on the
hours you work and the completed assignments.
When you get your work permit from him, be sure
to tell him if you are interested.

SENIOR PORTFOLIO WHY DO IT?
  • Investigate possible careers that fit you.
  • Learn to create a resume.
  • Create a portfolio (group of documents) that help
    you apply for scholarships, jobs, etc.
  • It helps you create a plan for you life AFTER
    high school.
  • Community service hours 10.

REQUIRED DISTRICT TESTING
  • CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam-
    English/Language Arts and Math)
  • Passing both parts of this test is required for
    all students in order to earn a high school
    diploma. Testing is done through the year, based
    on grade level.
  • STAR/ CST TESTING
  • STATE PE TESTING (7th and 9th grades only)
  • DISTRICT ASSESSMENTS/MAPS
  • Students interested in College Tests (PSAT, SAT,
    ACT) should contact our counselor for more
    information and how to register. These are
    currently done off campus.

ENROLLMENT PROCEDURES
  • Add/Drop Process
  • You will need to get an Add/Drop form from the
    counselor Mr. To.
  • Go to the high schools Registrar Office to
  • check out.
  • Be sure to check in all text books. Bills for
    lost books are passed on to each school. If you
    owe books, you will have to clear the bill before
    you can receive a diploma.

ENROLLMENT
3. Before you leave Banning High school, ask the
Registrar if you are completely checked out.
If you have transfer grades, be sure to get that
form and bring it to the office. New Horizons
Model High School gives partial credit for
passing grades. You have not completed
registration with NHHS until you have completely
checked out of your previous school.

ENROLLMENT
4. Then its of to Centralized Registration
  • You will need to take your ADD/DROP form to
    Centralized Registration, located at 161 West
    Williams Street.
  • You will see Ms. JoAnne Obregon who will drop
    you from your previous school and add you to the
    NHHS Student Enrollment List.
  • You will need to bring the paper work you
    receive from Ms. Obregon to NHHS, to complete
    your enrollment.

ENROLLMENT COMPLETE
  • Meet with Mr. To to get a class schedule.
  • Fill out sign Emergency Card.
  • Fill out sign NHHS compact.
  • Fill out sign Parent/Student Rights Form.
  • Parent/Guardian must be present
  • to sign all forms!!

things at BISS
? Fundraising ? Graduation assistance ? Clerical
help ? School Site Council

GRADUATION PICTURES
  • Graduation ceremony at the end of each year for
    those earning a high school diploma or
    certificate of completion during the school year.
  • School pictures available each fall and spring.
  • It is very important to take pictures so an ID
    can be issued.

TRANSPORTATION ISSUES
  • Parent/Guardian agrees to provide transportation.
  • No ride is NOT an excuse for missing school.
  • Have back-up plans and options ready to go
