When is Shougatsu?

Souji to Kadomatsu(Cleaning and Decorations)

• The Japanese sweep out the old year literally
  by thoroughly cleaning the house

• Decorations of bamboo and pine called kadomatsu
  are displayed by the entrances.

New Years Eve

• Toshi-koshi soba, long buckwheat noodles that
  symbolize long life are eaten with plenty of
  sake!

• Many Japanese watch the music program Kouhaku uta
  gassen on TV, a show that features the most
  popular J-Pop and enka singers of the year

Jouya no kane

• Temple bells are rung 108 times at midnight on
  New Years Eve
• 108 is symbolic of the purification of the 108
  earthly desires in Buddhism

Hatsumoude

• During the New Year, families pay the first
  visits of the year to shrines and temples

• Sometimes people will dress in formal kimono for
  the occasion

Osechi ryouri

• Traditional foods, called osechi ryouri, are
  eaten during the first three days of shougatsu
• Osechi ryouri was first eaten about 650 years
  ago, and consists of foods that can be stored for
  many days without refrigeration.
