Why does Library need LBECs?
  • Campus includes 950 buildings on 2,000 acres
    plus several off-site facilities
  • Diverse campus facilities including academic
    buildings, medical clinics, daycare, secure
    research labs, apartment-style housing, museums,
    theaters, and LIBRARIES.
  • 15 distinct collections within 8 physical
    library buildings and ALF

LBEC Roles Responsibilities
  • Point of contact for safety emergency
    preparedness information provided by UF
  • Liaison with Library Facilities and as needed
    with EHS, UPD and other emergency services in
    the event of an incident at your building
  • Completion of closure checklist and procedures
    before UF closures
  • Provide damage information following an incident
  • Read and follow BEC listserv messages

Building Information
  • Be knowledgeable of departmental space in
    building (critical issues, special circumstances,
    known hazards, etc.)
  • Serve as conduit for emergency/preparedness
    information
  • Maintain appropriate emergency supplies

Severe Weather
  • Each LBEC should monitor weather information
  • Watch Warning information provided by National
    Weather Service-Jacksonville www.srh.noaa.gov/jax/
    index.shtml
  • Campus specific forecast from NWS-Jax linked at
    www.ufl.edu/weather

  • Radio automatically receives and alerts for
    weather watches and warnings
  • Purchase radio with Public Alert logo-
  • Alachua County S.A.M.E. Code 012001
  • Tune to162.475 Mhz, channel 4 on most models

Tropical Weather / Hurricanes
  • LBECs should monitor tropical weather information
    throughout hurricane season
  • Important to read Hurricane Local Statements
    when issued by NWS-Jax.
  • Statements contain forecast of storms impact
    including rain and wind to our area (by County)

UF Closures
  • UF Closure decision made by UF President or his
    designee
  • UF Closure is really suspension of normal
    activities. Many departments continue essential
    functions. (UF Clinics, PPD etc.)
  • Libraries are NOT CONSIDERED essential.
  • Shelter(s) provided on campus for UF faculty,
    staff, students and their families
  • Review Building Access and Closure policy

  • Complete closure checklist lab/research area
    office/administrative area versions
  • Bring in or secure loose items outside of
    building(s)
  • Secure vehicles complete vehicle location
    checklist
  • Monitor information from UF administration
    regarding operational schedules

Damage Assessment
  • Complete Initial damage assessment for
    building(s) if needed following a storm
  • Directly contact Facilities if any damage is
    noted

Communication
  • Role of LBECs, DEPCs, Library Administration
  • Standing group, meet and update each year
  • Will work on getting better regarding
    communication over time
  • May establish a Google Group
