11The OCLC Conspectus
- The OCLC Conspectus is a subject hierarchy
consisting of Divisions, Categories, and Subject
descriptors. The Conspectus provides a framework
to systematically inventory and describe library
collections, and can be used with Dewey Decimal,
Library of Congress and National Library of
Medicine classifications. - The Conspectus is structured in hierarchical
order, from broad divisions to very specific
subjects. Each level is an increasingly detailed
partition of the previous level. The three levels
in the OCLC Conspectus, in hierarchical order,
are Divisions, Category, and Subject.

Level 2 )
34Resulting Analysis Screen 5
- Observe how the holdings in the subject Angola
are now broken up into the Publication Dates REO

39Examples of strategies for using Collection
Analysis
- Strategy A Identify Divisions, Categories,
and/or Subjects with high percentages of Overlap
as target areas in which to reduce any
unnecessary duplication - Strategy B Identify Divisions, Categories,
and/or Subjects with low percentages of
Uniqueness as target areas in which we can
increase the level of uniqueness and indirectly
reduce unnecessary duplication
40Example analysis using Strategy AReturn to
initial customized analysis screen displaying the
division History Auxiliary Sciences, i.e.
Resulting Analysis Screen 2, and click on
Overlap tab
41Overlap Analysis Screen 1
- Notice how both the CV and Level 1 of the REO
have defaulted to displaying all three IA
libraries (click on a single library to serve as
the basis for comparison)
42Overlap Analysis Screen 2
- VANDERBILT UNIV LIBR (TJC) is now the row
header, and all three IA libraries remain as
column headers. - (Click on the Display results as pull-down
menu and select Number with percent to display
the total number of duplicate titles, as well as
the percentage of the comparison librarys
holdings that this total number makes)
43Overlap Analysis Screen 3
- See overlap expressed as a total number of
volumes as well as a percentage. Example 2,739
vols. (UK) / 10,058 vols. (VU) 27.23 - (Note Overlap percentage rates for a library
will always be 100 when compared to itself)
(Next, click to expand)
44Overlap Analysis Screen 4
- Identify Categories/Subjects with significant
numbers and percentages of high overlap where
possible unnecessary duplication might be
minimized (See potential example - History - Americas, General, Indian, N. America )
45Example analysis using Strategy B
- On either the previous screen or the initial
customized analysis screen displaying the
division History Auxiliary Sciences, i.e.
Resulting Analysis Screen 2, click on the
Uniqueness tab
46Uniqueness Analysis Screen 1
- Notice once again how all three IA libraries
appear as row headers, and the four column values
display the following - Total holdings, Unique holdings, Holdings shared
by 2 libraries, and Holdings shared by all 3
libraries. - Again, click on a single library to serve as the
basis for the comparison
47Uniqueness Analysis Screen 2
- VANDERBILT UNIV LIBR (TJC) is now the row header
- Click on the link for the division History
Auxiliary Sciences to expand it
48Uniqueness Analysis Screen 3
- Identify Categories/Subjects with lower numbers
and percentages of uniqueness where we might
focus our collection development efforts with the
goal of increasing the level of uniqueness (See
potential example History - United States,
Slavery Civil War)
49Exporting Analysis Results
- At almost any point during an analysis, results
can be exported into Excel format by clicking on
the Export icon and saving as a .xls file
50Graphical Representations of Data
- At almost any point during an analysis, graphical
representations of data relationships can be
generated by clicking on the icon that
appears at the left of every row header
