2
Overview
  • This presentation describes an application that
was developed to allow users on remote systems to
simulate flight models and view engine data
provided by NASA's Numerical Propulsion System
    Simulation (NPSS)
  • Work presented within this presentation is part
of the Aviation Safety Project and represents a
collaborative effort between NASA Glenn and NASA
    Ames Research Centers
  • Contributors from NASA Ames include Bill
    McDermott and Jorge Bardina
  • This activity is supported by both the AvSP and
    BASE IT RT programs

3
Use Case Scenarios
  • How Is This Presentation Relevant to the NREN
    Satellite-enabled Network Connections?
  • On-Site Research for New and Proprietary
    Aerospace Technologies. Engine Performance
    Analyses
  • Field Investigations of recent Aviation
    Accidents. Provide On-Site Collaboration with
    Forensic Data

4
N-Tier Architecture of the Application
5
Simplified Architecture and Core Technologies
  • Core Technologies include
  • Java Server Page (JSP) / Java Beans
  • Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA)
  • Information Power Grid (IPG/Globus)
  • Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS)
    with 1-D Zooming

6
System Elements User Interface
  • Web Browser
  • Web Browser Interface Allows System Architecture
    Independence and Remote Access
  • Web Server
  • Tomcat (JSP/Servlet Engine) Open-source,
    reliable. Easy DB Access
  • Server Scripting
  • Java Server Page Provides Dynamic Web Page
    Content. Connectable to Java Beans

7
System Elements Data Files
  • Cloudscape DBMS
  • Used for storing users simulation configuration
    data
  • 100 Java, DB File access via RMIJDBC, High
    Performance
  • Flat Files
  • Used for flight input and engine simulation
    results
  • Easily Exported to Other Applications

8
System Elements CORBA
  • MICO ORB
  • Implementation is CORBA 2.3 Spec. Compliant.
    SSL-Enabled. Open-Source SGI / Linux Versions
    available
  • Communication via Internet Interorb Operability
Protocol (IIOP). No Firewall configuration needed
  • Monitors Concurrent Jobs on Multiple IPG Test
Beds. Efficient Allocation of Jobs to
    Distributed Machines

9
System Elements IPG/Globus
  • NASA IPG
  • Fundamental technologies for Computational Grids
  • Secure, (nearly) Seamless Access to Distributed
    Processing Resources
  • Managed Resource Allocation
  • Allow Remote Access to Secondary Storage

10
System Elements NPSS
  • Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS)
  • Component-Based Engine Simulation
    (Object-Oriented Architecture)
  • Uses Real Radar Telemetry Data to model engine
performance using a Turbofan Engine Simulation
  • Capable of increasing output resolution (zooming)
    from Zero- to One-Dimensional Data

11
Data Processing Capacity
  • Sample Data from Atlanta (5/20/2000) contains
1500 flights (arrivals and departures). Single
engine simulations for this data set were
    processed in 8 hours.

12
Demonstration
  • Aviation Safety Project Demonstration

13
Future Directions
  • Enable Simulation for use with Dynamic, Streamed
    Telemetry Data
  • Seamless integration of CORBA and Globus Services
    with CORBA-enabled NPSS
  • XML Use for Uniform Data Flow and Arbitrary
    Processing
  • Increase the Resolution of Engine Prototype with
    Higher Order Zooming
  • Perform Full Aircraft Simulations with NASA Ames
