ways over the period of 1840s to the present,
    2005 (160 years )

  • Summary of Population Changes
  • .Spatial Change Rural Urban Shift
  • When the British arrived, all people would have
lived within a village settlement scattered
throughout the territory depending on farming
    fishing
  • As the British established a trading port, the
urban settlement began to grow slowly over
time, people would move from the rural
settlements and settle in the more urban
environment centered on the harbour and its
    activities
  • Up until the 1950s, a sizable population
remained in the rural areas islands, and New
    Territories, pursuing a traditional lifestyle
  • After the 1950s a rapid decline in the rural
population as people moved out in droves to
work in the newly established manufacturing and
service industries and the development of New
Towns (1970s) rural settlements began to
    decline rapidly
  • By the 1980s all but of a few rural settlements
declined, and 99 of the population of HK was to
    be found in urban environments
