Hayabusa - Mission Overview
  • Launch 9 May 2003
  • Observation tour at Itokawa - Sept-Nov 2005
  • Landing for sampling 26 Nov 2005
  • Loss of control and communication - recovery
    complete in January 2006
  • Now en route back to Earth, possibly with sample
    of asteroid, arrival June 2010

  • Amica - camera
  • NIRS - near IR spectrometer
  • Lidar - optical altimeter
  • XRS - x-ray spectrometer
  • RS - radio science
  • Sample return

Hayabusa - Archive Status
  • Better late than never
  • Japanese personnel at UAz funded to prepare PDS
    products
  • DMAP still in preliminary form
  • Decision by project manager, announced at
    Hayabusa symposium in July, that raw data will be
    archived with PDS by March 2007
  • Science team has stated they can not calibrate
    the data before about 2008 (we can hope)
  • JAXA participated in IPDA workshop and stated
    they will use PDS standards as the basis for
    their own archive. At IPDA they were very
    pleasantly surprised to find that SBN had
    calibrated versions of a few Suisei Sakigake
    datasets that they did not have.

  • Several planetary gravity assists (mostly Earth,
    1 Mars), two asteroid flybys
  • Arrive at P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in 2014, deploy
    lander, follow through perihelion, nominal end of
    mission at end of CY15

Rosetta - Archive Status
  • DMP complete
  • SISs complete but not yet final for (nearly) all
    instruments on orbiter
  • Original schedule was for every 6 months
  • Data through observations of Deep Impact events
    delivered (in Oct-Nov) by most (all?) instruments
    on orbiter
  • Peer review in February 2007 at ESTEC with SBN
    participation
  • There are issues with the PSA validation tool due
    to vagaries of the PSD - referred to EN
