• February 12, 1809 born in Nolin Creek, Kentucky
• March of 1830 Begins a 200 mile journey to IL
• Settled in along the Sangamon River near Decatur

• Works as a clerk in a village store
• Learns basic math, reads Shakespeare, and
  participated in a local debating society
• 1832 Candidate for Illinois General Assembly
• Enlists into army and becomes Captain of his
  rifle company
• Doesnt actually fight The Black Hawk War

• Begins to study law
