Title: Vital Signs Framework
1Vital Signs Framework John Gross Ft Collins, CO
Data Managers Meeting April 2004
2- Overall goals at Network, Region, National Levels
- Committee established at IMAC last December
- Regional coordinators
- Some network and prototype coordinators
- IMTAG representatives WRD, ARD, Geology
Soils - Data managers
3Benefits of a program-wide framework
- Network level
- facilitate communication within and outside of
network - identify common needs for protocols
- improve uniformity naming, conventions
- organized (structured) examples of VS /
measurements - good example framework for new networks
4- Region / National level
- identify common needs for resource allocation
- permit and facilitate roll-up for reporting
- consistency increases credibility of program
- improve review of programs and monitoring plans
5We want the framework to address common questions
What networks have vital signs that include
(e.g., grasslands, etc)? How many parks have
implemented How many parks in the PWR identified
exotic plant occurrence as a priority vital
sign? What vitals signs have other networks
identified for (veg structure, etc.)? What
networks are developing a protocol for (xxx)?
6Framework Requirements
- Higher level structure simple, clear, concise,
informative - appropriate for all networks
- Ability to roll-up data for national reporting
- Ability to drill down to parks and vital signs
(measurements?) - Flexible
- multiple front ends to underlying data
- Networks can retain local syntax / structure

9What Networks do and dont need to do
Need to
- Include National framework in all Monitoring
Plans (Phase 1, 2, 3) - Associate network national VS (11 link)
- Maintain network side and send to Ft Collins
- May want to develop or maintain another framework
Do NOT need to
- Exclusively use the National framework
- Revise, abandon, or modify your existing
framework
10Current Status (since last Thursday )
- Levels 1 and 2 mostly complete (maybe a few
additions) - Some vital sign sets probably complete or
nearly so - Air and climate
- Water
- Some vital sign sets will see many additions
(Biological Integrity) - Descriptor table not yet complete
- Database design and application under development
Feedback welcome will need to add Vital Signs
and finalize database design
