IV. Seasonal Discussion
  • The Siberian High has now become the dominant
weather feature over the Western Pacific and the
Far East. The leading edge of the cold polar air
has pushed as far south as the Philippines. With
the exception of the western Japanese coastal
areas, conditions during November are quite
    similar to October.
  • The northerly flow of dry air over Korea results
in excellent weather there, but this same air, as
it travels over the warm sea between Korea and
Japan, picks up sufficient moisture to cause
extensive clouds along the west coast of Japan.
These clouds pile up against the mountains and
    cause overcast skies and precipitation.
  • East of the mountain chain, clear skies are
frequent, although smoke and haze mar the
otherwise excellent weather. Poor weather is
associated with frontal passages or developing
    low-pressure centers. Freezing temperatures and
snow showers can be expected in Hokkaido, the
northern part of Honshu, and Korea. Freezing
temperatures and snow, although they do occur
occasionally, are rare in the rest of Japan.
