Classification as per revised European TB case
definition (publication pending see also EuroTB
report 2006 Table 16 on www.eurotb.org). Probable
if in a clinical specimen there is detection of
either (i) acid-fast bacilli (AFB) or equivalent
fluorescent staining bacilli on light microscopy,
or (ii) M. tb complex nucleic acid, or (iii)
histological appearance of granulomata. Confirmed
if in a clinical specimen there is either (i)
isolation of M.tb complex (excluding
M.bovis-BCG), or (ii) detection of M.tb complex
nucleic acid AND AFB or equivalent fluorescent
staining bacilli on light microscopy. All
countries report data of varying completeness on
culture and AFB in sputum countries denoted by
() also report data on M.tb complex nucleic acid
and those with () report data on histological
appearance of granulomata.
