1
The First Symposium of Japan Consortium
for Glycobiology and Glycotechnology
-Integration from functional analyses of sugar
chains to systems glycobiology-
November 4, 2003
Tokyo Conference Center Organizer Naoyuki
Taniguchi, Akemi Suzuki (the Japanese Society
of Carbohydrate Res. and Japan Consortium for
Glycoscience) Under the Auspices of the Ministry
of Education, Science, Culture, Sports and
Technology (MEX).
Secretariat The Mizutani Foundation (Dr.
Keiichi Yoshida) Over 450 people attended.
2
  • The goal
  • To exchange information on on-going projects
  • To share the resources such as synthetic
    carbohydrates, antibody, glycosyltransferase
genes, animals with many scientists and database
    to facilitate collaborations world wide
  • To encourage young scientists to involve in
    glycoscience for the next generation
  • To develop new infrastructures and establish
    research core centers for glycoscience
  • To integrate glycobiology to systems glycobiology

3
  • Core members Project leaders and PIs whose
grants are supported by the Japanese Ministries
  • MEXT (The Ministry of Science, Culture, Sports
    and Technology)
  • The priority area, Hokkaido Univ.
    Postgenome Res.Bldg.
  • 21st Century COE program Osaka Univ.
  • Riken Frontier group
  • JST (Japan Science and Technology Organization)
  • CREST (Core Res. For Evaluation Science and
    Technology)
  • projects.
  • NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology
    Development Organization) projects AIST,
Hokkaido Univ. Mitsubishi Kagaku Inst. Life
    Science
  • OPRS (The Organization for Pharmaceutical Safety
    and Res.)

4
  • What is Systems Glycobiology ?
  • the new field of glycobiology
  • integrated systems of informatics, biology,
  • nanotechnology and medicine
  • the conversion from analog-based glycobiology to
  • high-throughput digital glycobiology.
  • This will change the way dynamic systems
    studied
  • and how the mechanism of disease are
    elucidated.
