What is CPD?
  • Section 26 of the Health Professions Act, 1974
    (Act No 56 of 1974)
  • Serves to maintain and enhance the knowledge,
    skills and ethical attitudes of practitioners so
    as to facilitate good quality of health care
  • Should meet an EDUCATIONAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL need
    and provide an effective learning experience for
    the participants

CPD for Dietetics
  • Continuous
  • Directly related to dietetics/nutrition
  • Therapeutic nutrition, community nutrition and/or
    food service management and administration

  • Refers to any activity where the individual has
    learned something new and/or where a new skill

Non-compliance, deferment erasure

NON-COMPLIANCE
  • Action by the HPCSA CPD committee Prof Board
  • Letter requesting a reason for the non-compliance
    within two weeks of receipt.
  • Explanation acceptable - six months to comply
    with the CPD requirements
  • Not comply - name forwarded to the Committee of
    Preliminary Enquiry (may decide on the basis of
    evidence, to grant a final additional 6 month
    period to comply with the CPD requirements)
  • Still not comply, one of the following actions
    will be taken
  • Registration in a category that will provide for
    supervision as considered appropriate by the
    relevant Professional Board
  • A remedial programme of continuing education and
    training as specified by the Professional Board
  • An examination as determined by the Professional
    Board
  • Suspension from practice for a period of time as
    determined by the Professional Board or
  • Any other action as recommended by the
    Professional Board.

DEFERMENT
  • CPD Committee reviews applications individually
    on an ad hoc basis
  • Strong motivation needed
  • Granted for 1-3 years
  • Deferment may be granted in the case of
  • outside South Africa for gt 12 months and is not
    practising his/her profession
  • outside of South Africa and practising in a
    country where formal continuing professional
    development does not take place
  • a practitioner who is registered for an
    additional qualification but will not meet the
    outcome within two years

DEFERMENT cont.
  • To re-enter the system after deferment will be
    subject to the following conditions
  • lt2 years, proof of full employment in the
    profession - recommence the CPD year immediately
  • gt2 but lt3 years, proof of employment - on the
    recommendation of CPD Committee, be required to
    complete a period of supervised practice as
    determined by the Professional Board in his/her
    area of practice, and will recommence the CPD
    year immediately
  • Did not practice profession - required to
    complete a period of supervised practice as
    determined by the Professional Board in his/her
    area of practice

VOLUNTARY REMOVAL FROM REGISTER DE-REGISTRATION
  • Apply in writing to the HPCSA before the last day
    of March
  • Request for a reinstatement
  • If after 1-3 years
  • period of supervised practice as determined by
    the Professional Board
  • written and clinical examination in relevant
    areas of practice
  • If after 3 years
  • written and clinical examination as determined by
    the Professional Board will be conducted in
    relevant areas of practice

RESTORATION AFTER ERASURE
  • gt1 lt 2 years and attending CPD activities
  • submit proof of CEUs
  • if at least 67 of the required CEUs for that
    period and complies with the other requirements
    for restoration, may approve the application
  • submit further proof of CEUs collected within 3
    months following restoration
  • gt1 lt 2 years and NOT attending CPD activities
  • resolution may be any or all of the following
  • passing a Professional Board examination
  • working under supervised practice and
  • collecting at least one years total CEUs.
  • gt3 years or more
  • resolution may be any or all of the following
  • passing a Professional Board examination
  • working under supervised practice and
  • collecting at least one years total CEUs.
