• Architecture assessment
• Ensures that LEA network has adequate
  connectivity
• Verifies that LEA Network is testable
• Monitoring capabilities assessment
• Verifies that LEA has ability to monitor network
  utilization within its network
• Identifies how much of the network is being used
  and how usage patterns change over time

• Verifies that network performance can be measured
  by determining available bandwidth, latency and
  packet loss

• Bandwidth that is made available across WAN for
  each concurrent user should be
• 6 kbps per concurrent OIAS user
• Application performance and connectivity is
  directly dependent on network latency and
  available bandwidth

What is the formula for computing network
bandwidth?

• 6 kbps x 1.5 (safety factor) x concurrent users
  NC WISE bandwidth requirement
• At (as discovered by network monitoring)
• Example LEA anticipates 20 concurrent users at
  school that has a 256 kbps connection with 50
  utilization and 70ms latency
• 6 x 1.5 x 20 180 kbps
• This means that LEA does not have enough
  bandwidth to run the NC WISE application because
  it does not have enough AVAILABLE bandwidth
• Additional systems beyond NC WISE need to be
  factored into the bandwidth equation

What information will network monitoring
provide?

• Provides information for assessing readiness of
  an LEA
• Provides health and capacity information on all
  LEA networks to aid in troubleshooting statewide
  application problems
• Provides information on the impact of NCWISE on
  LEA networks
• Provides information to aid in design and
  deployment of future network
• LEA is responsible for administering,
  developing, maintaining and troubleshooting its
  own network.
