3- Figure 1 The extension of the concept of
geophysical into heliophysical. - The tradition of intl. science years began almost
125 years ago with the first intl. scintfc.
studies of polar processes in - 1983-3
- A second Intl. Polar Year (IPY) was organized in
1932, but a worldwide economic depression
curtailed many of the planned activities.
4- IGY in 1957 was an unprecedented success on many
levels. - IHY will continue the legacy of this previous
events extending global synoptic studies, - and global interconnected processes to the rest
of the heliosphere.
5IHY OVERVIEW
- Space is a part of worlds cultural heritage. It
has inspired generations of artists, poets,
scientists and musicians. - Throughout history, societies have admired and
searched for meaning in the same night sky. - Indeed, space exploration can help bring cultures
together.
Kofi Annan, UN Sect.-Gen, World Space Week, 2001
6IHY Goals and Objectives
- A broadening of the concept geophysical,
extending the connections from the Earth to the
Sun and interplanetary space. - On the 50th anniversary of the IGY, the 2007, IHY
activities will build on the success of IGY by
continuing its legacy of system-wide studies of
the extended heliophysical domain.

9IHY NATIONAL EDUCATION and OUTREACH COORDINATORS
The National Coordinator for Education and Outreach will act as the liaison between those working on education and public outreach in their country and the IHY secretariat, as well as to the national coordinators of the other nations. The National Coordinator for Education and Outreach will be responsible for finding exemplary programs in Space and Earth Sciences in their country and inviting them to participate in the IHY and to identify formal and/or informal educational product(s) participating in IHY that could be useful to their country. Note If your country is not listed in this table, it means that there is currently no coordinator for education and outreach for your nation. Please contact your National Coordinator or the International Coordinator for Education and Public Outreach for more information. If you are interested in serving as a National Coordinator for Education and Public Outreach, please contact your National Coordinator.

19IHY CIP
- The principal mechanism for coordinating
scientific activities for IHY is that of
Coordinated Investigation Programmes - CIPs. In
keeping with the bottom-up approach of IHY as a
whole this is an open mechanism by which
researchers can propose activities that require,
or would benefit from, coordinated use of
facilities, whether space-based or ground-based
instruments, observatories, models or other
supporting research activities.
