Lesson One HEROES
  • Reinforce the idea of heroes that existed in
Greek culture, using John Barrallets Apotheosis
    of George Washington.
  • Students are introduced to the idea of icons in
    society
  • Students created two apotheosis
  • Trojan Figure
  • Modern Day Icon

4
So, what happened?
  • Students enjoyed inclusion of art.
  • Loved the close read of the Apotheosis and the
    poem based on close read.
  • Students found it difficult connecting Apotheosis
    concepts to Iliad.
  • Students biggest difficulty was in creating their
two apothoesises, which needed to include
    symbolism and creativity
  • Were students satisfied with their work?
  • Completion of work in a timely manner.

5
My critiqueI would change
  • Provide more supplies to students. If possible,
work in tandem with the art teachers, Ms. Neater
    and Mr. Davis.
  • Provide a better rubric, outlining what must be
    included in the apotheosis.
  • I would limit apotheosis to Trojan War hero
allowing for students to really focus.
  • I would create grading rubric beforehand so that
my students are aware of my expectations for
    their project.

Lesson 2 What do we expect from art?

GOALS
  • Paintings
  • James Whistlers Nocturne in Black and Gold
The Falling Rocket (1874) and his ensuing trial,
    Ruskin v Whistler
  • Kerry James Marshalls Many Mansions (1994)
  • Keith Harings mural, Crack is Wack (1986)
  • GOALS
  • Students will explore the expectations and
conventions of art, how artists have challenged
these beliefs and in doing so have created new
    beliefs and new conventions.

8
  • James Whistlers
  • Nocturne in Black and Gold The Falling Rocket
    (1874)
  • Two Close Reads
  • Students discuss reactions to painting
  • Analysis of Ruskins criticism of Whistler,
Whistlers reaction and the ensuing libel trial,
    Ruskin vs. Whistler, 1877
  • Socratic Seminar

NOCTURNE IN BLACK AND GOLD The Falling
RocketStudents Close Reads
  • There is emotion, mood
  • There are no objects
  • There images that collapse together
  • There are various tones of black
  • I see a fireworks illuminating the sky

10
Socratic Seminar
  • What did Ruskin write about Whistlers painting?
  • How did Whistler respond?
  • Do you think Ruskin was criticizing Whistlers
artwork, his artistic philosophy, the cost of the
work, or a combination of things?
  • Do you side with John Ruskins flinging of
paint or James Whistlers aesthetics and
    harmony?

I Think
  • Whistler refers to his art as an arrangement,
breaking guidelines, the principles of art, a new
way of art. - Christopher McDonald
  • I agree with Whistler because his artwork does
look like art. The fact that he went beyond the
norms of usual art techniques makes his new form
of art look even better. Also, the fact that it
was unseen before makes it cause the viewer to
think more, requires a higher complexity. Not
only is his work art, its high art - Nicole
    McGee
  • I agree with Whistler. Behind Whistlers work
he has his own meaning, his own ideas, and his
own thoughts about his work. As a rule of art,
we said that it has to have a meaning and the art
does have a meaning, just not in the sense where
you can easily interpret it. Art makes you
think, and thats what Whistlers arrangements
    forms of art. Ansherra Hillard
  • I dont agree with either. But in defending one
Id have to speak up for Whistler and the
painting as a wholeTo Ruskin it lacks value and
meaning, but to Whistler, it allows him to
transcend art into a whole other fusion.
    Jessica Brown

13
I think
  • I believe Ruskin is attacking Whistlers art
because of the amount the painting and because
hes afraid of more Whistlers. Meaning Whistler
could change the meaning of art. Tiara
    Bankhead
  • I agree with Ruskin because Ruskin berated
Whistler because his painting lacked finish.
As I critiqued the painiting, I too, noticed
several things Ruskin noticedI agree with
Ruskins statement that in order for a painting
to have a proper finish it has to evoke
    associations with nature and literature.
  • I agree with Whistler because I know his work
could have been better, but he felt like being
different in my eyes. His work could have been
like what Ruskin expects, but he knew what he
wanted and he did it. Kyle Gipson

14
Kerry James Marshalls Many Mansions, 1994
  • Social Commentary within a painting
  • How does Marshall compare to Whistler in terms of
    technique and convention?
  • Should art always have a message or a statement?

15
Keith Harings Crack is Wack, 1986
  • What are the boundaries of art?
  • When is graffiti no longer graffiti?
  • Did you know he did this without permission?!

16
