Resumes should emphasize...
  • Abilities and skills - transferable skills
    should be highlighted.
  • Needs of the employer - Your aim is to highlight
skills which directly apply to each employer.
  • How well you perform - Whenever possible, provide
    quantitative information in your resume.

3
Resume Donts
  • Dont.
  • list reasons for leaving previous employers.
  • include negative information.
  • include a photograph.
  • list salary history or requirements
  • include personal data such as age, height,
    weight, marital status, etc.
  • include problems of a personal nature such as
    divorce, mental illness, etc.
  • use industry slang/anacronyms without listing the
    term

4
Resume Layout
  • Have one-inch margins on all sides. You want to
create the visual impression that there is not
too much reading to be done.
  • Font size should be 11-14 pt.! Anything less
    will give the reader eyestrain.
  • Printing needs to be laser quality.

3 Types of Resumes
  • Chronological - this is the most widely used
style of resume. It presents information on
    educational and professional experience in
chronological order. Works well for someone with
    several jobs.
  • Functional/Skill - with this type of resume
headings stress skills and abilities rather than
dates and times of past education and
experiences. This format works well for someone
with little experience or few jobs.
  • Combination - takes the best of both worlds.
This resume emphasizes skills and provides a
    chronological perspective.

8
Transferable Skills
  • Transferable skills are skills that you take with
you or transfer from one job to another.
  • All employers want good communication skills.
This is just one example of transferable skills.
  • See our handout for more.

9
A Very Important Hint
  • Dont rely on spell-checkers or grammar-checkers
    on the computer.
  • Be sure to READ your resume and cover letter.
Its also a good idea to ask others to read it
over. They may find mistakes you had missed.
