Title: RESEARCH FOR PA MANAGEMENT IN SW UGANDA

1
RESEARCH FOR PA MANAGEMENT IN SW UGANDA
  • By
  • Aventino Kasangaki, ITFC, MUST

2
Water Quality Monitoring
  • To determine human impacts on aquatic
    ecosystems/efficacy of mgt interventions
  • Envtal variables e.g. oxygen, turbidity,
    conductivity, temp
  • Improved water quality as stream flows thru
    forest

3
Measuring environmental variables
  • A field assistant measuring conductivity in a
    forest stream
  • CND is high in degraded streams
  • Intensive sampling for 1yr to get baseline

4
Use of bioindicators
  • Bmi used as indicators of water quality
  • High EPT abundance indicates good water quality
  • BMWP score to measure water quality
  • Ecosystem services

5
Mt. Gorilla Censuses
  • Done every 5 yrs to assess efficacy of mgt
    interventions
  • Popn stands at 320 in BINP and 380 in the VCA
    (700 total)
  • Popn increase despite human conflicts

6
Mt. Gorilla groups distribution
  • Gorilla groups dominate less disturbed sites
  • Gorillas rarely range into MUZs

7
Problem Animal Control
  • Crop depradation mainly by Baboons, Bush pigs,
    Elephants
  • High popn increases pressure on forest

8
Control strategy
  • Plant non target crops e.g. tea close to boundary
  • Live fence of Mauritius thorn
  • Crop the vermin (baboons)

9
Mauritius thorn fence
  • A live fence planted close to boundary
  • Still in a trial phase

10
Resource Use in MUZs
  • Medicinal
  • Basketry
  • Beekeeping

11
Damaging harvest levels
  • Assessing damage on Ocotea sp

12
Information for managers W/s
  • Done every year to present research findings to
    PA managers
  • Publication in peer reviewed journals
  • Presentation at conferences e.g. SCB, ATB
  • Successes include fire mgt action plan, harvest
    quotas, waste disposal techs
