- Current Options use Stericycle Biowaste Boxes or
Autoclave and take to biowaste dumpster - Problems with Autoclaving Biowaste
- Potentially dangerous hazardous vapors can be
produced (e.g. phenol) - Time consuming
- Not cost effective vs. boxes
3The New System
- Only Stericycle biowaste boxes will be used
- Boxes and bags provided by Stericycle in the HSRF
biosafety shelter - When boxes are full in the laboratory
- Tape the boxes to seal them closed
- Move (via lab cart or dolly) to HSRF loading dock
storage container

7Bio Waste System Supplies
- Supplies
- Tape
- Boxes
- Red Bags
- Supplies will be stocked in the HSRF biowaste
shelter - Write the lab supervisor name and lab room number
on all waste boxes
8Biowaste Materials Disposal
- All solid biological waste generated from a
laboratory can go directly into the biowaste box.
- Examples
- Animal and human tissues
- Eggs
- Contaminated containers and media (such as well
plates) - Contaminated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
can be included as well.
Be sure the waste is double bagged in the
biowaste (cardboard) box. Frozen biowaste should
be transported by ESF staff. Contact us by
Tuesday for that weeks Thursday pick up.
9Sharps Disposal
Small sharps should be collected in a sharps
container before being placed in a biowaste box.
Pipette tips should be placed directly in the
biowaste box
10Liquid Bio Waste Disposal
- Biohazardous liquids (without chemicals) should
be mixed with a 10 Bleach solution for at least
20 minutes and then can be poured down the drain.
Note Please order A-1 brand bleach from ESF
because it does not contain mercury.
11Chemical Waste Disposal (e.g. chemo-therapeutics)
- PLEASE NOTE
- Pharmaceutical or chemical waste should NEVER be
discarded as biohazard waste in a box or sharps
container! - Please keep all liquids and chemicals out of the
biohazard waste boxes! - Tag all chemicals pharmaceuticals for pick-up
by (ESF)
