A human-centered approachto population
Preferred Customer NAFIS PICTURE
It is possible to solve our population problems
while at the same time respecting and nurturing
human rightsFamily planning is being integrated
into a broad-based approach to
reproductive heath which takes into account the
whole spectrum of the individuals reproductive
needs. This human-centered approach is at the
heart of international consensus that population
is not about numbers, but about people. - Dr.
Nafis Sadik, Executive Director, UNFPA - 1998
Global population reached 6 billion in October of
1999, and isstill rising by 78 million people a
year.

Fertility rates, population growth, and
population momentum
Total fertility rate number of children a woman
gives birth to over a lifetime. Fertility rates
are a key determinant of population growth.
Even when fertility falls to replacement level,
population will continue to grow because of
population momentum the impact of large
numbers of young people just entering their
reproductive years.

The challenge of rapid population growth
Rapid population growth challenges a countrys
ability to Ensure economic growth and
employment Provide health services, education,
and clean water Protect the environment At
least 880 million people in developing countries
do not have access to modern health services,
nearly 1.5 billion do not have clean water, and
one-fifth of children do not attend school to
grade 5.

Global consumption patterns
High consumption in developed countries strains
the global environment. A child born in a
developed country will add more to consumption
and pollution over his or her lifetime than will
30 children born in a less developed country.
Globally, 20 of the worlds people in the
highest-income countries account for 86 of total
private consumption the poorest 20 only 1.3
