Why ER and DW

• New data structures highly complex
• More than one database, thousands of tables
• Query tools require knowledge of tables and
  structures
• Query tools can impact core system performance
• Find a solution that addresses the above issues

• - ER is a unit within UCIT reporting to the CIO
• Report on tactical and strategic information that
  business users need
• Why ER ?
• To provide platform and Tools to help users query
  the DW
• Also query the DW, build standard reports that
  benefit users

• High probability for data errors in PeopleSoft
• Incorrect data appearing on reports is NOT a
  reporting issue (80 of the time)

• Request for access to ReportNet
• Access to Run Queries (also named Query Author).
• Access to Run Standard Reports (also named
  Consumer).
• Request for data
• Request for generating reports for your

What is Extranet ?

• Licensing alternative offered by our Vendor
  (Cognos)
• Requires a separate infrastructure and new
  security model
• License allows slice and dice functionality
• Running only pre-built reports

Why Extranet ?

• Licenses on the basis of number of CPUs
• Constrained by CPU/Performance
• More widespread distribution for pre-built
  reports
• Licensed for budget officers and researchers
  (currently)
• Additional number of adhoc licenses have been
  purchased for Student Admin users (100)

• IT support assigns a ticket for ER
• ER communicates with the user from that point
