Intervention
  • Woodruff Elementary adopted the Cool Kids
social skills system during the school year
2006-2007. After faculty training in August, the
program was implemented school wide. Our data
showed after several months that our students
were not retaining the monthly skill focus. We
therefore initiated a review month, as well as a
renewed focus on teaching, reviewing ,
    practicing, and positive rewards.

4
Rationale
  • Post testing of social skills indicated that
children were not retaining the monthly social
    skills.
  • We desired to see an increase in students
ability to recite the months monthly skill when
    randomly polled.

5
Data indicators
  • Our referral numbers of both level two and three
behavior problems mirrored the drop we saw in
    successful social skills training.

6
Trends and changes in data indicators after
intervention
  • Acknowledging that an intervention was needed,
we started a new plan in December, using that
month as a review of our previously featured
    social skills.

7
Implementation DescriptionThis is what we did
  • Teachers were explicitly informed of the months
    social skill, featured Expectation, and
building procedure to focus upon. We coordinated
those according to what our referral data
    indicated were trouble spots.
  • Students were introduced to the monthly social
skill on the first Monday of the month during
    their prep period.
  • Teachers were provided with posters and teaching
points of the given Cool Kids social skill.
  • Children were informed that those that could
successfully recall the details of the social
skill would be rewarded with a treat.
  • Students were polled in a random manner to gauge
    success.

8
Most recent data
  • We saw an obvious improvement in students
ability to recite the monthly social skill.
  • We also observed a noticeable drop in level two
and three referrals to our Refocus program.
  • Spring has shown an increase in referrals
(consistent with last years data), while our
post skill polling is relatively stable.
  • What do we attribute the increase in referrals
to? Spring time hormones? Lack of team focus?

General Discussion
  • Our goal this year was to institute our Think
Time program throughout our building, making it
an expectation of all teachers, and to implement
the Cool Kids program. We have been largely
    successful with both.
  • When our data showed a problem, our intervention
    was successful.
  • When assessing weaknesses in the system, we find
    one recurring theme
  • Any Positive Behavior based program needs
constant and consistent maintenance to remain
successful. It is virtually impossible to
    achieve goals without continual tweaking!
  • What should you know before becoming a UBI
Advanced school? Make participation on your
school committee a shared experience - everyone
should get a turn to play.
