Recall----How early MSS were identified. Why
begin the genealogy with son of David, the son
of Abraham? To what does book refer in the
first sentence? What barriers may be seen as down
in the genealogy. How does this give a glimmer of
Gods love? How in the genealogy does Matthew
show the virgin birth of Jesus deliberately? How
binding was the espousal period in marriages?
What is the seed of the kingdom? How is the seed
conceived in the heart? (Remember Heb. 1111)
How does Peter say that a person is born again in
I Peter 122? How does Jesus say a person is
born anew in John 35? What three did John say
in I John 58 testified together and agreed as
one?
3
What was the original source of water and the
blood? ( John 1934). How did Paul say sinners
reached the cleansing power of Jesus in Rom.
63-5? What reply did Mary Give the angel of the
Lord that denotes her faith? What great trials
can be seen in her faith? What reflects
character in Joseph as a just man? How can the
virgin birth be seen by the angels announcement
to Joseph? On what occasion did Jesus say his
real family was? Who are they? How does Paul
agree with this is Gal. 327-29
4

THE BAPTISM OF JESUS
  • .
  • THE MOMENT COMES
  • 13. Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan
unto John, to be baptized of him.
  • 14. But John forbad him, saying, I have need to
be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
  • 15. And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer
it to be so now for thus it becometh us to
fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him

26
JESUS EMPOWERED FOR THE MISSION BEFORE HIM
  • 16. And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up
straightway out of the water (Jn. 323) and, lo,
the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the
Spirit of God descending like a dove, and
    lighting upon him
  • 17. And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is
my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
  • JOHN 1 33. And I knew him not but he that sent
me to baptize with water, the same said unto me,
Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending,
and remaining on him, the same is he which
    baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
  • 34. And I saw, and bare record that this is the
    Son of God.

27
NOW, the critical question Can Jesus manage
the omnipotent power of God in a body of flesh?
28
Matt. 41ff There Must Be A Temptation
  • 4 1. Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into
the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
  • A. The temptation was not stumbled into, nor
accidental. It was the divine plan since Eden.
  • B. Satan had invaded Eden, Now the Son of Man
    invades Satans realm
  • The perfect combination to beat the
    devilGod/mandivorced man lost, united man
    wins.
  • Man is united with God through obedience to the
    Word.
  • It is written is shown to be the means of
    victory.

29
TWO SETS OF 3s IN THE TEMPTATION
  • 16. For all that is in the world, 1) the lust
of the flesh, 2) and the lust of the eyes, and
  • 3) the pride of life, is not of the Father, but
    is of the world.
  • Two 3 P in Satans Attack
  • 1) Position without privilege is zero (Lust of
    flesh)
  • 2) Position without prestige is zero (Pride of
    life)
  • 3 Position without power is zero (Lust of the
    eye)

30
THE DEMONIC ATTACKCREATE DOUBT (Rom. 1423)
  • TEMPT. 1 POSITION W/O PRIVILEGE IS O
  • 2. 3. And when the tempter came to him, he said,
If thou be the Son of God, command that these
    stones be made bread.
  • FIVE STUNNING BLOWS
  • 1. Satans request sounded legitimate (Col.
    116ff).
  • 2. It seemed to have scriptural precedent (Ex.
    1615).
  • 3. Dont make a fool of yourself before the
    world.
  • Are you really sure you heard the voice of God?
  • 4. Is God being really fair if your are His son?
  • 5. No one need ever know.

31
THE KEY TO OVERCOMING TEMPTATION
  • 4. But he answered and said, It is written, Man
shall not live by bread alone, but by every word
that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. (Dt.
    83)
  • (Living by every word to obtain righteousness
is a key leading into the sermon on the mount)
  • Jesus is the embodied word of God.

32
2ND TEMPTATION POSITION W/0 PRESTIGE IS O
If
6. And saith unto him, thou be the
Son of God, cast thyself down for it is written,
He shall give his angels charge concerning thee
and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest
at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
(Ps. 9112) 7. Jesus said unto him, It is writ
ten again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God
(Dt. 616)
33
2 MORE HARD BLOWS 1) PRIDE OF LIFE 2)
ACCOMODATING INTERPRETATION
  • SATAN PLAYS TO JESUS PRIDE
  • THE APPLAUSE OF THE CROWDS
  • SATAN MISAPPLIES PS. 9111-12 WRESTS IT AGAINST
    DEUT. 616
  • SATAN VIOLATES BASIC RULE OF INTERPRETATION IF
YOU INTERPRET A DIFFICULT SCRIPTURE AND MAKE IT
CONTRADICT A SCRIPTURE EASY TO UNDERSTAND YOUR
    INTERPRETATION IS INCORRECT

34
TEMPT. 3 POSITION WITHOUT POWER IS O
  • 8. Again, the devil taketh him up into an
exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the
kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them
  • 9. And saith unto him, All these things will I
give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship
    me.
  • 10. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence,
Satan for it is written, Thou shalt worship the
Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
