Noach
Bereshiyt/Genesis 69 Bereshiyt 69
(Transliterated Hebrew) Elah toledot Noach Noach
iysh tzaddiyq tamiym hayah bedorotayn
et-haElohiym hithalekh-Noach. Bereshiyt 69
(ISR) This is the genealogy of Noah?. Noah? was a
righteous man, perfect in his generations. Noah?
walked with Elohim.
8
Perfect in His Generations
Bereshiyt 69 (ISR) This is the genealogy of
Noah?. Noah? was a righteous man, perfect in his
generations. Noah? walked with Elohim.
  • Key Points/questions
  • Two opinions about perfect in his generations.
  • Noah was righteous even in, and despite his
    corrupt generation.
  • Noah was only called righteous compared to those
of his wicked generation. Had he lived in
Abrahams time, he would have been insignificant.

9
Intent of the Flood
Bereshiyt 617 (ISR) And see, I Myself am
bringing floodwaters on the earth, to destroy all
flesh in which is the breath of life from under
the heavens all that is on the earth is to
die. Reason for the flood are given in the
previous Torah portion Bereshiyt/Genesis 6 1-8
  • Key Points/questions
  • Who were the Nephilim?
  • Are the Nephilim the same as the sons of
    Elohim?
  • Does the text say that the sons of Elohim
caused Yah to send the flood?
  • Who did Yah intend to survive the flood?

10
Nephilim
  • Main theories about the Nephilim and the sons of
    Elohim
  • 1. They were the progeny of fallen angels who
lusted after and had sex with human women.
  • The sons of Elohim" are the male descendants of
Seth, and that the "daughters of men" are the
female descendants of Cain. Genesis 6 condemns
    intermarriage between believers and unbelievers.
  • 3. Sons of elohim means sons of mighty ones,
nobles, princes, judges or rulers. They were
taking wives from the general population,
whomever they chose. This is an example of
    powerful abusing the powerless.

11
Nephilim
  • All other times that Nephilim appears are
identical to Genesis 64 (without the extra yud).
  • Bamidbar/Numbers 1333 (NASB) "There also we saw
the Nephilim with extra yud (the sons of Anak
are part of the Nephilim) and we became like
grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in
    their sight."
  • The additional yud in Numbers 1333 could
indicate the word used there is originally
Aramaic in origin, and from the Aramaic word
naphiyl (giant) and not naphal (fall).

12
Naphiyl and Orion
  • Key Points/questions
  • The name "Orion"
  • - Orion is a mighty hunter
  • and a giant in Greek
  • mythology Killed by
  • Artemis (Diana), goddesss of the
  • hunt.
  • Derived from the Akkadian "Uru-
  • Anna (light of heaven). Over time,
  • Uru-Anna became..

Orion
13
NephiliymIranians?
  • Key Points/questions
  • . Uru-Anna became Aryan (the name ancient
    Persians called themselves)
  • Aryan became the modern country called
    Iran.
  • In Aramaic, Orion is known as naphiyl, the
plural is nephiylin. Normalized into Hebrew,
    nephiylin becomes nephilim. (The first
    definition for naphiyl is giant).
  • So, perhaps this means

In Jastrows Dictionary of the Targumim, the
Talmud Babli and Yerushalmi, and the Midrashic
Literature
14
NephiliymIranians?
Key Points/questions So, perhaps this
meansthat the Nephiylim in Bamidbar/Numbers
13 are fierce and powerful Persians Devarim/Deut
eronomy 92 (NASB) a people great and tall, the
sons of the Anakim, whom you know and of whom you
have heard it said, 'Who can stand before the
sons of Anak?' In a traditional Armenian story,
a Persian noble named Anak assassinated the King
of Armenia leading to the subjugation of Armenia.
(Anak is called a close relative or sometimes the
brother of the Armenian king).
15
Called Nephilim Because.
  • Key Points/questions
  • Tradition says they were called Nephilim because
they caused the downfall of the world.
  • The Bible never actually says the Nephilim
    sinned.
  • Nephilim may be the product of fallen angels and
human wives. So says the book of Enoch, the book
of Jubilees, the Genesis Apocryphon (DSS).
  • Allusions to Nephilim as angelic descendants are
found in Jude and the apocryphal books of Judith,
Baruch, Sirach, 3 Maccabees and the Wisdom of
    Solomon.

16
Called Nephilim Because.
  • Key Points/questions
  • A difficulty with angels being sexually active
might be found in the Messiahs remarks
  • Matthew 2230 (CJB) For in the Resurrection,
neither men nor women will marry rather, they
will be like angels in heaven.
  • But, then what did Paul mean by
  • 1 Corinthians 1110 (NASB) Therefore the woman
ought to have a symbol of authority on her head,
    because of the angels. ??

Clean and Unclean Animals
22
Clean and Unclean Animals
Read Genesis 71-3
Gen 71-3 (ISR) And ????  said to Noah?, Come
into the ark, you and all your household, because
I have seen that you are righteous before Me in
this generation. Of all the clean beasts take
with you seven pairs, a male and his female and
of the beasts that are unclean two, a male and
his female and of birds of the heavens seven
pairs, male and female, to keep offspring alive
on the face of all the earth.
Read Genesis 818-22
Gen 820 (ISR) And Noah? built an altar to ????,
and took of every clean beast and of every clean
bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
No unclean animals were offered to YHWH.
23
Clean and Unclean Animals
Read again Bereshiyt/Genesis 91-7
Bereshiyt/Genesis 93-4 3 "Every moving thing
that is alive shall be food for you I give all
to you, as I gave the green plant. 4 Only you
shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its
blood.
  • Every green herb (KJV) is not given for
  • food only those that are appropriate.
  • Poison ivy is green, but it is not food.
  • These words were given orally to Noah.
  • Eating one of the two unclean animals
  • aboard the Ark would violate to keep offspring
alive on the face of all the earth.
  • Humanity is made in the image of Elohim
    (Bershiyt 96).
  • Does it make sense that things unacceptable to
give to YHWH would be acceptable to
    humanity..even in Noahs time?

Poison ivy is not food

Worldwide Flood
27
Worldwide Flood?
Read Genesis 711-24
Genesis 723 (NASB) Thus He blotted out every
living thing that was upon the face of the land,
from man to animals to creeping things and to
birds of the sky, and they were blotted out from
the earth and only Noah was left, together with
those that were with him in the ark.
Fast forward to
Genesis 914-15 (NASB) 14 "It shall come about,
when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow
will be seen in the cloud, 15 and I will
remember My covenant, which is between Me and you
and every living creature of all flesh and never
again shall the water become a flood to destroy
all flesh.
If the flood was only local, didnt Katrina
prove that the rainbow covenant is broken?
28
Worldwide Flood?
What did the Messiah think?
Matthew 2437-39 (NASB) 37 "For the coming of
the Son of Man will be just like the days of
Noah. 38 For as in those days before the flood
they were eating and drinking, marrying and
giving in marriage, until the day that Noah
entered the ark, 39 and they did not understand
until the flood came and took them all away so
will the coming of the Son of Man be.
Is the coming of the Son of Man only local,
just like the days of Noah?

The Everlasting Covenant
Genesis 916 (NASB) "When the bow is in the
cloud, then I will look upon it, to remember the
everlasting covenant between God and every living
creature of all flesh that is on the earth."
A Covenant in Place as long as This World Exists
World Covenant
Briyt Olam
  • Olam is often translated by such words as
    everlasting, forever, and permanent.
  • However, it can also mean world as in the
phrase tikkun olam meaning healing or
    repairing the world.

31
Other World Covenants?
Genesis 177-10 (CJB) 7 "I am establishing my
covenant between me and you, along with your
descendants after you, generation after
generation, as an everlasting covenant, to be God
for you and for your descendants after you. 8 I
will give you and your descendants after you the
land in which you are now foreigners, all the
land of Kena'an, as a permanent possession and I
will be their God." 9 God said to Avraham, "As
for you, you are to keep my covenant, you and
your descendants after you, generation after
generation. 10 Here is my covenant, which you
are to keep, between me and you, along with your
descendants after you every male among you is to
be circumcised.
32
Other World Covenants?
Exodus 31 16 (CJB) The people of Isra'el are to
keep the Shabbat, to observe Shabbat through all
their generations as a perpetual
covenant. Leviticus 245-8 (CJB) 5 "You are to
take fine flour and use it to bake twelve loaves,
one gallon per loaf. 6 Arrange them in two rows,
six in a row, on the pure table before ADONAI. 7
Put frankincense with each row to be an offering
made by fire to ADONAI in place of the bread and
as a reminder of it. 8 Regularly, every Shabbat,
he is to arrange them before ADONAI they are
from the people of Isra'el, as a covenant
forever.
33
Other World Covenants?
2Samuel 231-5 (ISR) And these are the last
words of Dawid_, the saying of Dawid_ son of
Yishai, the saying of the man raised up on high,
the anointed of the Elohim of Yaaqob_, and the
sweet singer of Yisrael 2 The Spirit of ????
has spoken through me, And His word is on my
tongue. 3 The Elohim of Yisrael said, The Rock
of Yisrael spoke to me, One who rules over man
righteously, 4 Who rules in the fear of Elohim,
Is like the light of the morning when the sun
rises, A morning without clouds, Tender grass
from the earth From sunshine, from rain. 5 For
is not my house so with El? For He has made an
everlasting covenant with me, Ordered in all
matters, and guarded. For all my deliverance and
all desire, Shall He not make it send forth a
Branch?
34
Other World Covenants?
1 Chronicles 1615-18 (NKJV) 15 Remember His
covenant forever, The word which He commanded,
for a thousand generations, 16 The covenant
which He made with Abraham, And His oath to
Isaac, 17 And confirmed it to Jacob for a
statute, To Israel for an everlasting covenant,
18 Saying, "To you I will give the land of Canaan
As the allotment of your inheritance," Psalm
1058-10 (NASB) 8 He remembers His covenant
forever, The word which He commanded, for a
thousand generations, 9 The covenant which He
made with Abraham, And His oath to Isaac, 10 And
confirmed it to Jacob for a statute, To Israel as
an everlasting covenant,
35
Other World Covenants?
Isaiah 245-7 (ISR) For the earth has been
defiled under its inhabitants, because they have
transgressed the Torot, changed the law (choq),
broken the everlasting covenant. 6 Therefore a
curse shall consume the earth, and those who
dwell in it be punished. Therefore the
inhabitants of the earth shall be burned, and few
men shall be left. 7 The new wine shall fail, the
vine shall languish, all those glad at heart
shall sigh.
36
Other World Covenants?
Isaiah 551-3 (CJB) 1 "All you who are thirsty,
come to the water! You without money, come, buy,
and eat! Yes, come! Buy wine and milk without
money- it's free! 2 Why spend money for what
isn't food, your wages for what doesn't satisfy?
Listen carefully to me, and you will eat well,
you will enjoy the fat of the land. 3 Open your
ears, and come to me listen well, and you will
live- I will make an everlasting covenant with
you, the grace I assured David.
37
Other World Covenants?
Jeremiah 3237-40 (ISR) See, I am gathering them
out of all the lands where I have driven them in
My displeasure, and in My wrath, and in great
rage. And I shall bring them back to this place,
and shall let them dwell in safety. 38 And they
shall be My people, and I shall be their Elohim.
39 And I shall give them one heart and one way,
to fear Me all the days, for the good of them and
of their children after them. 40 And I shall
make an everlasting covenant with them, that I do
not turn back from doing good to them. And I
shall put My fear in their hearts so as not to
turn aside from Me.
38
Other World Covenants?
Jeremiah 504-5 (CJB) 4 In those days, at that
time," says ADONAI, "the people of Isra'el will
come, together with the people of Y'hudah. They
will weep as they go their way, seeking ADONAI
their God. 5 They will ask the way to Tziyon
and, turning their faces toward it, will say,
'Come, join yourselves to ADONAI by an
everlasting covenant never to be forgotten.
39
Other World Covenants?
Ezekiel 1660-63 (ISR) But I shall remember My
covenant with you in the days of your youth, and
I shall establish an everlasting covenant with
you. 61 And you shall remember your ways and be
ashamed, when you receive your older and your
younger sisters. And I shall give them to you
for daughters, though not by your own covenant.
62 And I Myself shall establish My covenant with
you. And you shall know that I am ????, 63 so
that you remember. And you shall be ashamed, and
never open your mouth any more because of your
shame, when I pardon you for all you have done,

Other World Covenants?
Ezekiel 3724-26 (CJB) 24 My servant David will
be king over them, and all of them will have one
shepherd they will live by my rulings and keep
and observe my regulations. 25 They will live in
the land I gave to Ya'akov my servant, where your
ancestors lived they will live there- they,
their children, and their grandchildren, forever
and David my servant will be their leader
forever. 26 I will make a covenant of peace with
them, an everlasting covenant. I will give to
them, increase their numbers, and set my
sanctuary among them forever.

Shamefully Exposed
Bereshiyt 920-27 (CJB) 20 Noach, a farmer, was
the first to plant a vineyard. 21 He drank so
much of the wine that he got drunk and lay
uncovered in his tent. 22 Ham, the father of
Kena'an, saw his father shamefully exposed, went
out and told his two brothers. 23 Shem and Yefet
took a cloak, put it over both their shoulders,
and, walking backward, went in and covered their
naked father. Their faces were turned away, so
that they did not see their father lying there
shamefully exposed. 24 When Noach awoke from his
wine, he knew what his youngest son had done to
him. 25 He said, "Cursed be Kena'an he will be
a servant of servants to his brothers." 26 Then
he said, "Blessed be ADONAI, the God of Shem
Kena'an will be their servant. 27 May God
enlarge Yefet he will live in the tents of Shem,
but Kena'an will be their servant."
44
Shamefully Exposed
Bereshiyt 924 (CJB) 24 When Noach awoke from his
wine, he knew what his youngest son had done to
him. Questions/Comments What did Ham to do
Noah? And why did Canaan get the curse and not
Ham?? One explanation is that Canaan saw Noah
and ran to tell his father, who enjoyed seeing
his fathers dishevelment and drunkenness. One
reason given for Canaans curse is that YHWH had
already blessed Noah and his sons (Bereshiyt
91), and there cannot be a curse where a
blessing had already been given. (Similar to
Isaacs inability to change the blessing he
bestowed upon Jacob instead of upon Esau).
45
Abram and Sarai
46
Abram and Sarai
  • Bereshiyt/ Genesis 1129-32 (NASB) 29 Abram and
Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of
Abram's wife was Sarai and the name of Nahor's
wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the
father of Milcah and Iscah. 30 Sarai was barren
she had no child. 31 Terah took Abram his son,
and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai
his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife and
they went out together from Ur of the Chaldeans
in order to enter the land of Canaan and they
went as far as Haran, and settled there. 32 The
days of Terah were two hundred and five years
    and Terah died in Haran.

47
Abram and Sarai
Questions/Comments According to the sages,
Iscah is Sarai. Iscah means one who looks
forth. The commentary says A woman has two
missions in life, the first from birth as an
individual, and the second, when she marries and
is elevated to a higher, joint mission with her
husband. Sarai/Sarah, the name indicating her
Abrahamitic mission, is used exclusively from the
time of her marriage.
48
Abram and Sarai
Questions/Comments The death of Terah.
According to the sages, the death of Terah is not
sequentially listed here. Terah died more than
60 years after Abram left Haran, according to
various verses. However, in one sense it is
accurately depicted Even while alive, the
wicked are called dead, and the righteous, even
when dead are called alive.
