2GALAXY
3There are billions of galaxies in the universe.
We live in the Milky Way Galaxy.
4Our galaxy consists of
planets
moon
stars
sun
5Flying throughout our galaxy are many man made
objects
6And naturally-occurring objects.
7COMETS
8ASTEROIDS
9METEOROIDS
10NEBULAS
11STARS
12BLACK HOLES
13STARS
14Stars are self-luminous objects that shine
through the release of energy produced by nuclear
reactions at their core.
15Our Galaxy is made up of over 100 billion stars.
The sun is just one of them.
16BLACK HOLES
17A black hole is a region in space around a very
small but massive collapsed star.
18THE GRAVITATIONAL FIELD IS SO INTENSE THAT LIGHT
CANNOT ESCAPE.
19 COMETS Are objects made up of gas, ice and
dust. They travel around the Sun in an orbit.
20They warm up as they approach the Sun. This
causes the Comet to form a head and tail. The
head is the cloud-like mass we see in the front.
The tail is the trailing part which is made up of
small particles and ice.
21Comets are named for the person who discovered
them.
22This is the Shoemaker Comet.
23COMET
This is Halleys comet.
24HALE BOPP
COMET
25ASTEROIDS
26ASTEROIDS
Orbit the Sun mainly between the orbits of Mars
and Jupiter. They are also known as the Minor
Planets.
27METEORS
28Meteors are rocks in space. They are often called
shooting stars.
29When a meteor strikes the earth it is called a
meteorite.
30The Meteor Crater in Arizona was caused by a
falling Meteorite.
31NEBULAS
A nebula is an interstellar cloud of gas and
dust.
32This is the Helix Nebula.
33These are Nebula Pillars.
34This is the Crab Nebula.
35We extend our thanks to NASA and Glenns Midi
Site.
