3Apple Releases Streaming QuickTime 4 and Final
Cut Video Editing Software
- Apple Computer released the public beta of
QuickTime 4 for both the Macintosh and Windows
platforms. QuickTime 4 features streaming of
live and on-demand video and audio over the
Internet. In addition, Apple announced it has
begun licensing its Internet Streaming Server
software under an Open Source model. The beta
also includes a new QuickTime Player with an
improved layout including the ability to play MP3
files and can be downloaded at http//www.apple.co
m/quicktime. Apple also introduced Final Cut
Pro, its long-awaited digital video editing
software for the Macintosh for 999.
4Geo Interactive Launches WebRadio.com (4/19/99)
- Geo Interactive announced the official launch of
WebRadio.com, a brand new no-plug-in Internet
radio site that will broadcast 24 hours a day/7
days a week. WebRadio is using Geos Emblaze
(http//www.emblaze.com) streaming audio and
video technology that doesnt require plug-ins
for playback, just a Java-enabled browser. So
far, WebRadio has deals with over 70 radio
stations. Geo Interactive is an Israeli-based
company with offices in Woodland Hills,
California.
5Onradio.com Announces Branded Media Player
(4/14/99)
- Onradio.com (http//www.onradio.com), the largest
network of radio station Web sites on the
Internet, announced the availability of the
Onradio.com Branded Media Player. The
custom-designed player is built from Microsoft
Windows Media Technologies 4.0. The program is
designed to provide local radio stations with
additional branding and revenue-generating
opportunities by extending their station brand
over the Internet. Two Onradio.com affiliates
(WBLS in New York and Q101 in Chicago) have
already beta tested the product, which will be
available to all of Onradio.coms streaming
stations starting this month. Onradio.com,
formerly known as Electric Village, provides a
scalable and turnkey Internet solution to the
radio industry and currently has more than 575
radio stations in its stable.
6SGI MediaBase to Integrate RealNetworks G2 Server
(4/14/99)
- SGI (http//www.sgi.com) announced a development
and distribution agreement with RealNetworks that
will integrate RealSystem G2 into the companys
SGI MediaBase server systems. According to the
agreement, SGI will continue to bundle RealServer
5.0 with the SGI MediaBase media streaming
solution, but will provide SGI customers who
purchase SGI MediaBase in 1999 with a free
upgrade to the G2 system once its released
sometime this summer. In a separate
announcement, the company announced it was
changing its name from Silicon Graphics, Inc. to
SGI. SGI is a supplier of high-performance
systems, from desktop workstations and servers to
high-end supercomputers.
7Encoding.com Announces Record 1st Quarter Sales
(4/13/99)
- encoding.com, a provider of audio and video
encoding and optimization for the Internet,
announced a record first quarter of 1999 due to
demand for its digital media encoding
capabilities. Total sales for the first quarter
ending March 31, 1999 were more than twice the
sales of all of 1998. As a result of the
increase in demand, encoding.com opened a
satellite lab in Southern California by
partnering with InterVU, a leading provider of
hosting solutions for streaming media.
Additionally, encoding.com also launched the beta
version of mediaUpgrade.com (http//www.mediaupgra
de.com), an online automated encoding and
publishing solution. Later this month, the
privately held company expects to close on a
5-10 million round of investment.
8RealNetworks Acquires MP3 Developer Xing
Technology Corp (4/13/99)
- RealNetworks announced it was acquiring
privately-held Xing Technology Corporation
(http//www.xingtech.com), a developer of MP3
software, in a deal valued at 75 million. Xing
is the maker of StreamWorks, a streaming media
system. Recently however, Xing has focused on
making a wide array of MPEG audio and video
compression software such as AudioCatalyst and a
free streaming MP3 system called StreamWorks MP3.
The acquisition is expected to be completed in
the third quarter of 1999.
9Microsoft Introduces Beta Release of Streaming
Media 4.0 (4/13/99)
- Microsoft announced the availability of Windows
Media Technologies 4.0 beta, a major upgrade of
its streaming media system. Much of the focus of
this upgrade deals with digital music delivery
and e-commerce enhancements. According to the
company, it can stream FM-quality audio to
28.8Kbps modem users, allows for high quality
downloadable files that are half the size of MP3
songs. Video compression has also been improved.
The Windows Media Technologies 4.0 beta, includes
the Windows Media Player, Windows Media Services,
Windows Media Tools and Windows Media Audio SDK

10RealNetworks IBM Team Up for Secure Online
Music Delivery
- RealNetworks and IBM announced an agreement to
develop a platform for the secure delivery of
online music. The companies will use
RealNetworks client technology and encoding
tools and IBMs Electronic Music Management
System (EMMS), a system developed for the
distribution of digital content, including music.
The EMMS will be used by the big five music
companies (BMG, EMI, Sony Music, Universal Music
and Warner) to conduct a trial that will
eventually allow the secure distribution of
full-length, CD-e-quality albums to consumers.
The market trial will begin this spring.
11Spinner.com to Offer Music Auctions with
CityAuction
- Internet radio company Spinner.com launched
Spinner.com Auctions, a music auction partnership
with CityAuction, a person-to-person auction
site. Spinner.com will offer listeners a place
to buy and sell music CDs, vinyl, cassette tapes,
audio equipment and memorabilia through a
co-branded auction marketplace accessible on the
Spinner.com homepage. As part of the
co-branding agreement, Spinner.com will display
CityAuction banner ads on its site and music
players. CityAuction (http//www.cityauction.com)
is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ticketmaster
Online-CitySearch.
12Diamond Multimedia Launches Special-Edition Rio
Portable Player
- Diamond Multimedia Systems (http//www.diamondmm.c
om) introduced a special edition of its Rio
portable player. This updated player features a
teal iMac colored casing, more capacity (64MB)
and will sell for 249.99.
13Creative Labs Launches NOMAD Portable MP3 Player

- Multimedia hardware manufacturer Creative
Technology (http//www.soundblaster.com)
introduced its line of NOMAD portable digital
audio players. The NOMAD includes features like
voice recording, an FM Tuner, an LCD screen to
view artist name and song title,rechargeable
batteries and is smaller than a deck of cards.
The player uses a cradle to connect to the
computer and also comes with software to convert
CDs into MP3 format. Creative also launched an
MP3 portal called NOMADWorld (http//www.nomadworl
d.com) where users can download music and MP3
tools. The NOMAD comes in a 64MB (249.99) and a
32MB (169.99) version and will be available some
time this quarter, the company said.
14Entertainment Blvd. to Stream Infomercials

- Website operator Entertainment Boulevard is
starting an infomercial web site called
Netfomercial (http//www.netfomercial.com)
featuring streaming video infomercials.
Entertainment Boulevard entered into a deal with
LA Group, Inc. which operates the Ronco website
(http//www.ronco.com) and Seen on TV
(http//www.seenontv.com) that allows it to
stream two-to-five minute ads of Ronco products
prior to purchasing them. In exchange
Entertainment Boulevard will receive a percentage
of the purchase price of each product sold.
Entertainment Boulevard runs a number of web
sites including Vidnet, an interactive music
video site.
15MSN Announces Marketing Agreement with
Broadcast.com (4/8/99)
- Microsoft Corp. announced a joint marketing
agreement with broadcast.com to become a
preferred Internet service provider on the
broadcast.com Web site. As a result, customers
of MSN Internet Access tuning in to broadcast.com
should experience better quality audio and video
when using multicast. MSN Internet Access will
also promote its ISP services through
broadcast.coms site and in turn, broadcast.com
will feature it as a preferred ISP for its
visitors.
161st Net Technologies to Launch www.iporoadshow.net

- 1st Net Technologies Inc. (http//www.1stnettech.c
om) announced the introduction of
www.iporoadshow.net, a web site that will provide
online streaming of investor information. 1st
Nets Multimedia division will offer streaming
services, utilizing INTERVUs network.
17MultiMedia Access Changes Name to ViewCast.com

- MultiMedia Access Corporation, a supplier of
turnkey video solutions and makers of video
capture cards announced it was changing its name
to ViewCast.com, Inc (http//www.viewcast.com).
The company takes its name from its ViewCast
system, released in September 1997, which offers
a turnkey solution for streaming media that works
with both RealSystem and Windows Media. As part
of the name change, the company will focus more
on streaming media technologies. Its NASDAQ
ticker symbol is now VCST.
18White Pine Software Integrates Streaming into
Videoconferencing Server
- White Pine Software, Inc. (http//www.wpine.com),
a provider of videoconferencing software
announced the integration of streaming media
technologies into its MeetingPoint conference
server. MeetingPoint is a standards-based
software product that enables real-time
multipoint group conferencing over an IP network
using the H.323 protocol. With the integration
of streaming media, MeetingPoint will be able to
broadcast a live conference and allow them to be
recorded and played back through third-party
streaming technologies like RealPlayer or Windows
Media Player. The software is scheduled to be
released in June 1999.
19Tunes.com Launches BigVideo for Broadband Music

- Internet music site Tunes.com (http//www.tunes.co
m) announced the launch of BigVideo, a new
broadband video section on RollingStone.com.
BigVideo is designed for users with high-speed
Web access and was created in collaboration with
Microsoft, using the newest version of its
Windows Media Technologies. RollingStone.coms
BigVideo will reportedly have TV-quality
resolution for its initial collection of 100
music videos available on demand and will be
streamed on INTERVU Inc.s network.
20Globix and RealNetworks Offer Turnkey Solutions

- Globix Corporation (http//www.globix.com), a
streaming media solutions provider announced an
arrangement with RealNetworks, Inc. that makes it
ones of the largest providers of RealNetworks
solutions on the east coast. Globix manages,
produces and broadcasts live and on-demand
content for the Internet and intranets.
21MCI WorldCom Enhances Multicast Service (4/6/99)
- UUNET (http//www.uu.net), a division of MCI
WorldCom, announced the next phase of UUcast, its
IP multicast service. This phase, to be
available in June 1999, will allow both dial-up
and dedicated broadband users to access the UUNET
multicast network for receiving content such as
streaming audio and video. Multicast enables
broadcasters to reach hundreds of thousands of
users via a single stream thereby reducing the
amount of bandwidth to reach a large audience.
Bloomberg is one of the first companies that will
be testing the enhanced UUcast service.
22On2.com Launches Sites Catering to High-Bandwidth
Users (4/5/99)
- On2.com, a new division of video compression
company The Duck Corporation, announced plans to
launch a network of sites that focus on broadband
content. The first sites slated for introduction
are On2Movies, On2Travel and On2School. The
sites will offer full motion video content such
as movies on demand and video tours of schools
and travel destinations. The first site,
On2Movies, is scheduled to launch in Q4 1999.
The Duck Corporation (http//www.duck.com) is the
creator of the TrueMotion compression (or codec)
that is used to compress digital video.
