Are we in this alone?

• Apple has not used AppleTalk since 1999
• Other institutions
• Univ. of Minnesota, Cornell, MIT, UC-Berkeley,
  Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, Johns Hopkins, U Penn,
  UNC-Chapel Hill, Rutgers, Michigan, plus several
  others

Why?

• Both vendors Apple Novell moving to IP routed
  protocols
• Changing industry trends
• Compatibility with hardware, software, and
  infrastructure initiatives
• More Secure Network
• Voluntary, gradual approach

How will this affect me?

• No longer see zones in the chooser
• May need to upgrade printers, change file server
  configurations, change data backup locations,
  double check Win NT configuration
• Will still be able to use AppleTalk WITHIN a
  subnet - building/department not just number
  subnet

Specific Implications

• More Secure Network More to Less will work
  but not Less to More
• 8.6 on up capable of IP printing and file sharing
• Departments that share more than one subnet will
  not be able to share devices

Whats going to happen now?

• Not a major impact! ..... Unless you move to
  the More Secure Network
• No longer creating documentation listing
  AppleTalk as an option
• Current AppleTalk documents removed from ITC Web
  Dec 31, 2003
• Instructions provided for IP alternatives

What about the future?

• Core network infrastructure will be upgraded
  again 3 yrs. AppleTalk and IPX will probably
  not be incorporated in the build.
