Example of Problem-Based Learning
  • You are the head of pediatrics at a large city
hospital. Jane Barton is one of your patients.
Doctor, what will you do in the cases of Jane's
baby? Jane Barton is pregnant. She first came to
you about two weeks ago after she and her husband
received the results of tests ordered by her
family doctor. The tests indicate that Jane and
Ralph's baby is anencephalic. The couple is
concerned about the fetus and wonder what to do
if Jane cannot deliver a normal, healthy infant.

Historical Perspective

    as approach to educating doctors
  • early 1950s
  • (Savery, 1994)

9
Why PBL?
  • PBL holds that learning is accomplished by
    knowing and doing
  • Knowledge and the ability to use knowledge are
    important
  • Employers expect new employees to be prepared to
    enter the workplace

10
Barriers to Problem-based Learning
  • Difficult Transition
  • More Time to Teach Same Content?
  • Faculty Lack Facilitator Skills
  • Changing the Curriculum

11
Advantages to PBL
  • Emphasis on Meaning, Not Facts
  • Interpersonal Skills and Teamwork
  • Facilitator-Student Relationship
  • Transfer of knowledge

12
Why PBL and Distance Learning?
  • passive readings based course ???
  • use the web for what it is

13
Distance LearningThree types of interactions
  • Leaner-content interaction
  • Learner-instructor interaction
  • Learner-learner interaction
  • (Moore and Kearsley, 1996)
