Title: Questions and Answers Children Might Ask
1Questions and Answers Children Might Ask

2The Three Questions I Chose Were
- What happens to our skin when we sunburn and how
does sunscreen work? - Why do our fingers and toes wrinkle when they are
in water for a long period of time? - Why does ice cream give me a headache?
3So are you wondering what happens when our bodies
suffer a sunburn? result of the
ultraviolet rays from the sun melanin
within the skin safely absorbs these rays
however, sometimes our skin cannot handle the
intense rays given off from the sun So why does
our skin turn red from sunburn? result
of increased blood flow, cell membranes become
damaged and leak out chemicals such as
prostaglandins and cytokines. Chemicals cause
the blood vessels to dilate, causing redness
SPF Sun Protection Factor
4Melanoma-skin disease that can be caused by the
sun
5Did you know.?
There are two types of ultraviolet photons that
are emitted from the sun. They are known as UVA
and UVB rays. UVA rays-a longer
wavelength penetrating through the skin forming
free radicals, resulting in premature aging.
UVB rays-shorter in wavelength and they do
not penetrate through the skin however, they
causes significant damage to DNA, resulting in
sunburn and skin cancer.
Therefore, one should use sunscreen, a protective
agent against the sun, daily. But how does
sunscreen work? Sunscreen acts as a
barrier, stopping UV rays before they reach the
skin causing damage. It contains organic
molecules that absorb UV rays and inorganic
pigments that absorbs, scatter, and reflect UV
rays. Must have significant quantities of zinc
oxide, avobenzone, and titanium dioxide.
One should be aware that SPF numbers indicate
sun block protection for only UVB rays,
therefore, UVA rays can still reach the skin and
cause premature aging. One should look for
sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.
6Do you know?
- Why our fingers and toes wrinkle in water after a
long period of time? - Your skin is made up of two layers, the outer
layer is the epidermis and the lower layer is the
dermis. - The outer layer produces a substance called sebum
which has the job of keeping water out of our
skin. After your fingers and toes have been in
water for awhile the sebum washes away and the
outer layer of your skin begins to absorb water.
Since your skin is absorbing water, it begins to
swell up. - But why are your fingers and toes only affected?
- Epidermis is tied down in certain spots in your
body (thicker spots) - Where it isnt tied down, it expands and begins
to wrinkle in water
7What Makes Up The Skin
8Ice cream Blood vessels Headache
9Why Does Ice Cream Give Me A Headache?
- Food and liquids touch the top of your palate, or
the roof of your mouth - Cold temperature sets off certain nerves that
regulate how much blood flows to your head - Nerves respond by causing blood vessels within
your brain to swell up, causing the pounding and
pain that you feel. - Commonly called a brain freeze
- Can happen with any cold food or drink product,
not just ice cream - Suggestions for preventing this from occurring
eat cold foods slowly, warm foods in the front of
your mouth before swallowing, and hold tongue
against roof of mouth to warm up blood vessels so
blood flow continues
