- Typically, when a patron reads a book and
lets us know he or she enjoyed it, well come up
with authors that are similar in appeal and
suggest them to the patron. (Wyatt, 2006) While
many patrons may be satisfied with that, some may
really just want to stay wrapped up in the
feeling or atmosphere the original book evoked.
For example, if a mystery novel features a real
place, person, or event, the reader may want to
do a little more delving to discover more
information on the subject. If a certain type of
music is discussed, then the patron may want to
hear what it sounds like. - A Reading Map is what is known in library
circles as a Whole Collection Readers
Advisory. (Wyatt, 2006) When the reader visits a
Reading Map, the two obvious starting places are
either the author or the book that originally
captivated him or her. The reader can then click
on various links to find out about more
resources--both fiction and non-fiction--which
will allow him or her to stay in that world of
the original book. If the reader does just want
to learn about similar authors, that information
is also available on the Map.

- My books are like Appalachian quilts. I take
brightly colored scraps of legends, ballads,
fragments of rural life, and local tragedy, and I
piece them together into a complex whole that
tells not only a story, but also a deeper truth
about the culture of the mountain South.

- The Ballad Novels are very special to me. They
are the books I want to be remembered for, and I
hope that they reflect the beauty and richness of
the land and people of Appalachia in a way that
is accessible to a large number of readers
throughout the world. -
